Spring Training Game Wrap 2/15/2019: Giants 4 White Sox 4

Yangervis Solarte was the hitting star as the Giants battled the White Sox to a 4-4 tie in Scottsdale.  Hey!  It's better than a loss.  Key Lines:

Yangervis Solarte 2B- 2 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .400.  Batting RH, Solarte stroked a HR to left that looked like it might not have gone out in Oracle Park.  He later poked a groundball single through the right side.

Evan Longoria DH- 2 for 2.  BA= .667.  Longoria drew 2 BB's in 3 PA's yesterday so has an OBP of .800 after 2 games.

Derek Holland LHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 27.00.  Holland had an uneventful first inning but then gave up 3 straight hits to open the 2'nd inning.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- Pomeranz gave up a run in his first inning(3'rd) on a single and 1-out triple by Yoan Moncada.  He struck out Preston Tucker to end the inning then retired the side in order on the 4'th inning with 3 GB outs.

Conner Menez LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO- 2/0.  ERA= 0.00.  Very nice appearance by Conner Menez.  He won't make the team, but it's important for prospects to leave a positive impression w/hen they get the chance.

The Giants go on the road for a game against the Reds in Goodyear today with Dereck Rodriguez getting the start and Shaun Anderson slated to make an appearance.

*********************************************************************************

Still waiting for Bryce.  The Dodgers seem to be back in the mix now, but reportedly are still offering only a short term deal.  One guy who might be secretly rooting for the Dodgers to sign Bryce is Travis Bergen.  The tea leaves say Philly is the only team offering a 10 year deal and Bryce doesn't want to go to Philly.  He's holding out hoping the Giants or Dodgers crack or another "mystery team" emerges.

*********************************************************************************

Clayton Kershaw tried to throw again and it didn't go well.

While the Giants waited for Bryce, Marwin Gonzalez quietly signed with the Twins for 2 years/$21 M.

  1. Why does a player want a 10-year contract?
Security? $100M/5 years isn't enough security?
Guaranteed money? He wants to be paid when he isn't worth it?
Ego? 30,000 fans yelling your name every day and you need an ego boost?
Why not take a contract when there is a reasonable probability you'll perform?
Why tie up a team past your ability to produce?
Do you really want to play out the string when you aren't earning it and tying up your teams roster and payroll?
    I don't get it!
Is it strange that owners are not "getting it" now or that they haven't before?
What are Harper and Boras trying to get? Seems like it's a ticket out of Philadelphia without leaving a dollar behind. Are the Phillies and were the Nationals really willing to bet that Harper will be worth $30MM AAV for 10 years? This is a guy with ONE really great year and 3 not much better than a minimum Major Leaguer. Giants fans are already ruing Longoria's next 5 years and several contracts that won't be worth their dollars in any future year.
Of the 10 contracts over $10,000,000 last year, maybe 2-3 were worth the pay. It's down to 8 this year, the over/under is probably 3 for 2019.
The feast was 5 years*, the drought may well last 5 until the payroll waste is worked through.
*one of the feast years was pretty bad!

    1. Can't blame a player, who has has spent their entire life preparing to play baseball for a living and only has a career expectancy of 15-20 years and only a 5-6 year window of peak earning power, for wanting as much financial security as possible when that window finally opens for them. $100 M might seem like a lot of money, and it is, but $100 K was a lot of money when Willie Mays was playing.

    2. I meant it slightly differently: Once you get to a point, doesn't "security" encompass more than the total dollars or AAV?
Arenado could probably get more on the open market this winter, but playing in Colorado will give him the chance to have HOF stats which is "priceless"!
Would Bumgarner rather get, say, $200M to stay in SF or $175M to go "home" to Atlanta? Although most reading this blog would rather live in a condo in SF (Bum's summers) than a NC farm (Bum's offseason), beyond some amount of money, there's no place like home.
Perhaps this is Harper's dilemma: Philadelphis for half the year or close to home and family all year. Wonder what LA is offering -- I'd take 175/5 there before 300/10 in the East.
OTOH, you couldn't pay me to live in SF!

    3. Quality if life is important and Harper is obviously not diggin' the idea of spending his next 10 seasons in Philadelphia. He may be thinking about how Philly fans tend to react to highly paid players who they think are underperforming. Proximity to family and climate may well be factoring into this too.

  2. Which OFer( Williamson or Ferguson 0-5; Shaw, Maybin, or Parra 0-4) will get their first hit today?
    I'm betting on Mac!

  3. I give the front office credit for going after Harper, but their pursuit doesn't feel right in some ways. They hire Zaidi as their new president who has been known for creating depth, payroll flexability, and not believing in "splashy moves. Now Bob Nightengale reported that Giants ownership may need to step in and overrule Zaidi because ownership wants to offer Harper a long term deal but Zaidi doesn't want to. Not good for the organization to have a conflict after only a few months on the job. If they are not going to go all out to get Harper, they should drop out of this and go to their plan B before it's too late to pivot. I doubt that Harper considers SF unless they increase their offer. I'm not sure if Harper is worth that kind of commitment anyway.

    1. How do we know that Zaidi does not believe in "splashy" moves? He did trade for Manny Machado at the deadline last year.

It is believable that Zaidi is advocating short term/super high AAV vs long term high AAV.

  4. I believe I read somewhere Zaidi mentioned that big splashy moves might sound good early on but might be regrettable later. He also gave an example of Derek Rodriguez as an under the radar move that worked out well. I do think if he is advocating short term/high AAV they'll have no chance with Harper especially with the Dodgers in the picture. He never gave a big long term deal when he was with the dodgers either.

    1. it's also possible that Zaidi has looked at Harper's injury history and spray charts and just doesn't think he is THAT player who you tie your franchise to for the next 10 years. If so, he might be right. If he truly believes it, he should tell Baer it's either him or Harper. Now THAT would be an interesting showdown!

    2. Johnson's probably with Baer,

  5. As soon as metrics can predict a "peak" with an 80% certainty, the big long contracts will be over except for a team needing something NOW and dam the long term.
    Hey, maybe we're there!

  6. It's kinda hard to believe how MUCH some want Harper no matter how bad the last 5 (of 10) years might be.
I would luv him solidifying the next 3, maybe 5 years, putting a little Punch in the poor Judy show, and the Giants don't have any "bad" spending beyond 3 years (well, Longoria is bad in year 4), so what's $30M/yr down the drain in 2023-2028?
OTOH, approaching 80 yo, should I care about the last 5 years, Doc?
