Spring Training Game Wrap 3/13/2017: Rangers 7 Giants 1

Jeff Samardzija game up a grand slam HR to Carlos Gomez that sounds like it might not have been out in most regular season MLB parks.  The Rangers cruised after that.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .091.  Maybe Span is coming around after an extremely slow start to spring.

Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.  Mac also had an OF assist throwing out a runner at 3B.  Keeps the pressure on Parker in the race for the starting LF job.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 9.82.  Sounds like Shark pitched in a bit of bad luck, but dingers have always been his downfall.  Hope he's getting game like this out of his system in the spring.

Michael Roth, David Hernandez, Reyes Maronta, Hunter Strickland- 1 scoreless IP each.  Hernandez is gunning for a roster spot.  Maronta is trying to impress for the future.  Strickland probably has a safe roster spot.

The Giants face the Indians tomorrow with Albert Suarez getting the start.

Big cutdown after the evening game as 40-man roster players Kyle Crick, Chase Johnson, Ian Gardeck, Reyes Maronta, Dan Slania and Miguel Gomez were optioned to minor league camp while non-roster invitees Wynton Bernard, Austin Slater, Steven Duggar, Aramis Garcia, Matt Winn and Ryder Jones were reassigned.

  2. Question Doc. Who do you think the Gs take off the 40 man roster if they decide to keep someone like Hill or Rollins, and do you think that will play into their decision at all?

Also, I am a huge Mac fan, but he didn't seem to help himself last night with three bobbled balls in the outfield. He didn't field one ground ball clean even though he did throw out a runner at 3B. I'm just not sure that did anything to enhance his chances of gaining the LF job.

  3. With those cuts we're down to 48 in the big-league camp, so we're just over halfway to the 25-man opening day roster. To me the interesting/big battles are:

LF: Parker/Williamson with Williamson being at the disadvantage because he has options.

3B: Bochy seems to be indicating it's Nunez's job. But Gillespie is putting on a lot of pressure and, of course, 'Hwang can Hit.' (That's a 'Yan can Cook' pop-culture reference. I'm old, I make old-man jokes. So sue me...) And then there is Arroyo behind them. Just a couple of years ago we had no realistic 3B prospects in the pipeline except the very error-prone Duvall.

Utility: Tomlinson is at the disadvantage because of his options. But there is no quit in him with his .364 BA. Rollins, OTOH, is doing himself no favors at .136... Brown, while probably best as a catcher, is quite the Swiss army knife but has the options disadvantage against the veteran Aaron Hill who is playing well and with Hundley, at catcher, playing well and, of course, Bochy liking vets putting two strikes against Brown that have nothing to do with his performance (which has been very good so far).

#2LH: In the land of small sample sizes: Okert (4.0 IP) has been performing well. Osich (4.1 IP) has been fairly bad.

Anyway, plenty of time for it to get all sorted out.

    1. Parker isn't the only Giant out of options.
According to mlbtraderumors.com, Tim Dierkes reports that Hunter Strickland, George Kontos, Gorkys Hernandez, Cory Gearrin, and Conor Gillaspie are also without options.
Strickland and Gillaspie are probablyly safe, and maybe Kontos, but Hernandez and Gearrin are playing with last year's money, showing little thus far this Spring. But it's still early.
Some of the veterans probably have opt-out's and I can't imagine the Giants' wanting too many of them in Sacramento taking up development/recall space. Rollins, Morse, Beckham, Reynolds come to mind. Hill's playing like he ought to stay, but that'll take a 40-man slot, too.
Parker's hot again, but there's enough time for him to get cold, hot, and cold a couple more times. I don't think the Giants are quite ready to give up. They want to showcase him against the A's and see if they'll bite with something better than a PTBNL.
This is one of the more interesting Springs with so many What-Ifs playing.

  4. Evans opens up (frankly) on Cain in Merc:

    Softening the blow?
At some point the roster spot is worth more than the bad karma of putting the horse out to pasture
