Scouting the 2017 Draft: Quentin Holmes

Quentin Holmes, OF, HS.  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 180 lbs.

Holmes is a guy with one elite tool and a very projectable body.  That tool is speed and he is likely the fastest player in this year's draft pool with a top 60 yard dash of 6.15.  An 85 MPH throw from the OF is average at best and his Time to Impact of .126 is slow.  The swing may be long but it does produce an exit velocity of 90 MPH which is not terrible and the body is highly projectable.  The speed plays on the field as scouting reports love his SB and OF coverage skills. He is a true future defensive CF.

A team that drafts him in the first 2 rounds will have to believe they can help him shorten the swing and still get some semblance of power out of it.  IMO, guys like this are great risks to take in the supplemental or second rounds.  He's the type of prospect the Giants are not known for drafting.  Teams with a history of taking players like this would include the Royals and Brewers.  Sabermetrically inclined front offices tend to shy away, which is now most of MLB.

  1. Who is the best outfielder drafted and developed by the Giants since Jack Clark? Chili Davis, a 3-time all star?
Are any of the new crop (Reynolds, Slater, Duggar, Quinn, Fabian) projectable to all star level?
The Giants have drafted a number of OFers in the first 5 rounds (including Williamson & Parker), but they don't seem to work out. Even if he makes the roster, at 28, Parker probably won't be memorable.

    1. I think any of the players you named has a chance to be an All-Star at least once or twice or it's possible none of reach that level of play. The Giants simply have not drafted outfielders aggressively over the years. Their one first round OF, Gary Brown, was a bust. I am more optimistic about the current crop of Giants OF prospects than at any time in the Brian Sabean/Bobby Evans regime.

  2. Is Colton Hock, the Stanford reliever, the most major league pitcher in the draft. He is off to a great start with three saves and two wins (in relief)?

    1. I would say no, but I may need to move him up the draft board.

  3. I think the sleeper of this draft is Quentin Holmes from New York City
Yes he is fast, but he actually can swing the bat
I would not be surprised if he was drafted in the 1st around the 15th-20th overall pick in the first rd
