Down on the Farm: 8/7/2015

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies blanked the Sacramento River Cats 2-0:

Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(17).  BA= .263.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.   ERA= 3.52.

I guess you could say Stratton was effectively wild.  The K's are impressive and he got extra outs from a GIDP and a CS that are not reflected in the GO/AO.  Would like to see the BB's come down, though.

AA Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2:

Austin Slater(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .303.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .262.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 4.91.

Beede took a shutout into the 7'th inning.  He came out after allowing the first two batters to reach.  They scored on a 3-base throwing error by Jackson Williams on a Sac attempt with Tyler Mizenko on the mound.  One of Beede's 4 BB's was an IBB and 1 came in the 7'th inning.  He also got 2 GIDP's.

High A  Lake Elsinore Storm outlasted the San Jose Giants 2-1 in 13 innings:

Aramis Garcia(Catcher)- 2 for 5.  BA= .400.
Brandon Bednar(3B)- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .245.
Chase Johnson(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 13/0.  ERA= 2.57.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.85.
John Polonius(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.40.

The Giants finally ran out of pitchers after the 15 inning game Thursday night.  I did not make it to the game due to a family event that came up.  It appears Johnson had the hard 2-seamer working pretty good.  Garcia gets the promotion from Augusta and has a successful high A debut.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Rome Braves 7-2:

Dylan Davis(DH)- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .264.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .272.
Chuckie Jones(LF)- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .260.
Mark Reyes(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 12/2.  ERA= 2.28.
Rodolfo Martinez(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.16.
Touki Toussaint(RHP, Braves)- 4 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.05.

Impressive appearance for the flame-throwing Martinez.  Rough times for Touki.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes erupted over the Eugene Emeralds 9-2:

Ronnie Jebavy(CF)- 1 for 4, HBP, 2 SB(17).  BA= .252.
Miguel Gomez(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .366.
Jose Vizcaino, Jr(DH)- 1 for 3, HR(5), 2 BB.  BA= .333.
John Riley(1B)- 3 for 4, 2 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .229.
Andrew Suarez(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 6/0.  ERA= 1.88.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Love what Viz is doing in his first pro season. Will we see him and Gomez in San Jose next season?  Riley is 11 for 24 over his last 6 games and is hitting .333 over his last 10.  He has raised his BA from .170 to .229 in that 6 game stretch.

AZL Giants outscored the Angels 7-5:

Mikey Edie(CF)- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .265.
Dillon Dobson(1B)- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .315.
Byron Murray(LF)- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(2).  BA= .292.
Kevin Rivera(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .313.
Zach Bowers(Catcher)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .149.
Deiyerbert Bolivar(LHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 8/0.  ERA= 1.64.

Murray looks like he is ready to move up and out of the rookie leagues next season.  Not sure about Edie.  This was Bolivar's longest outing of the season after making his 2015 debut on July 24.

DSL  Giants edged out the Rojos 7-6 in 11 innings:

Sandro Fabian(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, HR(2), 2 BB.  BA= .246.
Robinson Medrano(1B, 19 yo)- 3 for 6, 3B.  BA= .300.
Brayan De Pena(DH, 17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, HBP.  BA= .219.
Raffi Vizcaino(RHP, 19 yo)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.15.

  1. While there hasn't been much talk about him, Austin Slater is really making some incredible progress in the minors.

He was a HS short-stop that went to college and played OF for Stanford. He was drafted in the 8th round as an OF by the Giants last year and that's where he played. However, he was too much of a tweener (not fast enough for CF, not enough power for the corners) so they moved him to the infield this year trying him as a SS and a 2B.

He wasn't so hot at SS, but since his conversion to 2B he's put up some remarkable work for someone who just made a position switch at such an advanced level of baseball. So far he's got a great fielding percentage. He's got a great range factor. And he's hitting very well in RIchmond, where BA's go to die. He's also made a strong move on the MLB prospect rankings, jumping from 29th to 18th in just half a season.

Now I'm not saying he's the next Joe Panik. But he's pretty fast-track. 2014 was short season and rookie league as an OF. 2015 he started at San Jose (SS/2B) and is already to Richmond (2B). And he's done it without missing a beat in the batter's box and is playing (so far) a pretty decent 2B from everything I've been able read.

Anyway, I thought it was very interesting to see someone fairly lightly regarded rocket up the MiLB levels while changing position. Most of the time that seems to be a recipe for complete disaster.

    1. Agree completely. Giants are going to have an interesting surplus of players to deal from in the very near future. Do they deal the guys who have already had success at the MLB level or do they deal the prospects? I don't think they want to emulate Billy Beane and churn players, but it might be interesting to see what they could get back for, say, Brandon Crawford now that his is starting to get expensive.

  2. Would be interested to see Stratton as a September call-up. He's pitched well in AAA despite having a losing record, but he's had 4 QS where he's given up 2 runs or less and has only a 0-1 record to show for it.. I read an encouraging article on MLB.com on Tyler Beede saying he could be ready for the show sometime in 2016..
