Down on the Farm: 5/4/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Albuquerque Isotopes 11-4:

Joe Panik(2B)- 4 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .344.
Tony Abreu(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, BB, HBP.  BA= .297.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 5, 2 HR(8).  BA= .254.
Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .261.

Panik is red hot, but always have to be cautious with PCL numbers.  Duvall continues to show impressive power.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels quieted the Trenton Thunder 5-3:

Mario Lisson(3B)- 2 for 2, 2 HR(4), 2 BB, SF.  BA= .277.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .278.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 11/4.  ERA= 1.84.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(8).  ERA= 0.73.

Angel V is actually drawing a walk here and there.  He has an OBP of .345.  Lisson has suddenly heated up.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks downed the San Jose Giants 8-6:

Mitch Delfino(3B)- 3 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .336.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.02.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.55.

Love what Delfino is showing, hitting for both average and power.

Low A  Greenville Drive ran over the Augusta Greenjackets 12-2:

Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .222.
Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .242.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, 2 HBP.  ERA= 4.43.
Donald Snelton(LHP)- 3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
San Slania(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.11.

Strange line for Jones.  Gotta think there must have been some bad luck BABIPing going on there.

  1. Hello Doc,

Looks like you don't put faith in Noonan results so far or at least you don't talk much about him. I don't know if he can play at SS at MLB level .Do you think he is for real this year ?
Anyways, if he keeps hitting he will be a very good trade bait this summer.

Keep the good job going, it's very appreciate from France !!!

    Let's go giants !!!

    1. GIP, where in France are you?

Etes-vous un Américain vivant à l'étranger, ou êtes-vous originaire? Je vais visiter Versailles le mois prochain, et je suis vraiment impatient d'y être.

    2. Hello Lyle,

I live in Paris .... et je suis français, so forgive me for my bad english. GIP means Giants In Paris !!!!

Enjoy your visit in Versailles, it's wonderful. Next month you will have an exposition on the diplomatic relations between France and China in 18th century which could be very instructive.
If you come in June, you should make a reservation for the show called "Grandes eaux musicales de Versailles", it's a must see.

Will you go at Versailles only or will you go in Paris as well ?

    3. Thanks for reading and commenting, GIP. One of the big surprises I have had since starting the blog is how many readers I get from around the world, including countries you would never dream had anyone in them who had the slightest interest in baseball. I assume many are expatriate Americans, but it seems a surprisingly large number are just people from other countries who, for whatever reason, have developed an interest in baseball. I had a conversation with someone from the Croatia during a fantasy mock draft who got interested in baseball through playing fantasy baseball!

As for Nick Noonan, I have posted his line in the Down on the Farm segment several times. As always, you have to take PCL stats with a grain of salt, and there is a reason why Hicks, Adrianza and Arias are on the 25 man MLB roster and Noonan is not. I think he is strictly a 2B as far as any MLB starting role goes. I think he has a chance to be a decent utility guy at some point, but he has to somehow prove he can sustain his hitting at the MLB level. Getting a shot at MLB is tough and staying there is even tougher.

    4. I learnt two things in Paris. One, Sacre Coeur is one of the most underrated sights in the world and second, do NOT go up the Eiffel Tower in a wind storm.

I noticed Brown, as well as Panik are starting to create a stir in Fresno, but the Delfino might be the next most interesting player after MacWilliamson.. Crick seems to be further back than Blackburn or Blach for now... Snodgrass seems bored with the 2nd round with AA.

I want to see more of Adrianza... Doc, really informative website...

    5. TackleBox! Is that you? Remember when we saw Crawford make that throw up in High Desert? One throw! We just looked at each other and knew right there. Kid had an arm! Didn't need to see any bigger sample size than that. That one throw was all you needed to see.

    6. Doc that kid has come a long long way since that super baby Giants team.. I remember the throw well... Still like going out there to the desert.... Nice people and nice park...

    7. Ha! Buster Posey was on that team and so was Madison Bumgarner, although Bummy was in the stands charting pitches that night. Conor Gillaspie was playing 3B. I remember we weren't too impressed by his arm or his defensive moves.

  2. It's certainly interesting to see AnVil placing a little more attention on his OBP. I know it is still early in the season, but do you think that he is now sacrificing some home run power for a higher OBP (drawing more walks and hitting more line drives)?.

I will second GIP, this is always a great read first thing in a morning from the UK!

    1. Thanks, Matt. Again, love the international interest. The Eastern League is very tough on hitters. Angel is on a pace to hit 15 HR's for the full season which is about what you would expect from a power hitting prospect in that league. I don't think he is sacrificing power. I do think he is showing evidence of development as a hitter, which is very exciting to see, because that bat has a chance to be special!

  3. Panik's numbers are quite impressive, but AAA always seems to make them hit better. Not sure if he's really there yet, but if he keeps hitting and Hicks doesn't, I could see the Gmen giving Panik a shot this year. If Panik is legit, that would be huge in terms of stabilizing the IF, especially with questions about Panda. Would be somewhat ironic if we have issues at 3b but we fix 2b. Wonder if Duvall gets a shot this year too.

  4. Panik tore Albuquerque a new one. Nice to see his ISO climb closer towards .100. Albuquerque is close to a mile high, so put that into the equation.

  5. I think Abreu gets a shot before Panik does this year. Giants are going to have to make some decisions on their current second basemen at some point this year and since Hicks still has options, I think he would be the odd man out. He's hit a few HR's but that strike out rate is very ugly.

    1. I don't think that Hicks has any options left, he has seen time in the majors in 2010-2012, that's 3 options plus option for 2013, so that's 4 options that should have been used up. But the rules on that confuses me still, and I don't recall if any of the beats noted his option status. I tried to dig up news about his options, and an MCC post claims he has an option, but according to a Mets blog from 2013, he was already out of options when the Mets traded for him.

I'm thinking that the confusion is probably because he was signed as a minor league free agent, which meant the Giants could have sent him down to the minors with no problems out of spring training, but now that he's on the 25-man roster, he would need to pass thru waivers to get sent down by the Giants. So it wasn't that we still had an option on him, it was because he signed a minor league deal.
