Down on the Farm: 5/14/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies were idle.

AA Game 1  Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3:

Ricky Oropesa(DH)- 2 for 3.  BA= .236.
Ryan Lollis(LF)- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .200.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.35.

Not much to comment on here.

AA  Game 2  Bowie Baysox beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4:

Mario Lisson(DH)- 1 for 2, HR(5), BB.  BA=  .213.

High A  San Jose Giants topped the Stockton Ports 7-5:

Shawn Payne(DH)- 3 for 6, 2 HR(3).  BA= .302.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 3 for 6.  BA= .335.
Rando Moreno(2B)- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(10).  .218.
Pat Young(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.36.

Mitch Delfino is a hitting machine!

Low A  West Virginia Power edged the Augusta Greenjackets 5-4 in 10 innings:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .400.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 13/0!.  BA= 3.75.

The Mayor of Augusta(RafRod) makes an appearance!  Mella was killing worms, but extreme GB pitchers are going to give up hits that find holes in the IF.

  1. Would it be correct to say that the starting pitchers in A-, A+, and AA (or even Escobar in AAA) are not showing quite the hoped-for development here in 2014? That is, none seems to be forcing the issue, as Sabean often says, for a spot in the ML rotation in 2015. Or even 2016. I realize there's a lot of season to go, but it makes me wonder if that will affect the team's calculation in the June draft.

    1. I Would say that is a fair statement.

    2. How much stock should we put in Escobars stats considering he's in the PCL, a hitters league, to give a fair evaluation of performance? No love for Ty Blach who is doing well AA?

    3. The PCL is tough to evaluate because it is such an extreme hitter's league. You almost have to depend on scouting reports and how the pitcher is throwing rather than stat lines. On the other hand, Escobar's peripheral numbers have not been at all impressive save for a couple of games right after he reportedly tweaked his mechanics. There has certainly not been anything that screams out that they have to bring him up now, but there has also not been anything that makes you want to bail on him as a prospect. He has not pitched badly, just not anything to make you sit up and take immediate notice.

    4. I'd love to see Blach succeed. His ERA is even further down from the Cal. League, and his peripherals are similar except that his SO/9 is WAY down. He's pitching to contact, quite successfully. Love to see him do that at the ML level and will cross my fingers. But pitch-to-contact guys in AA seem hard to project; most seem to end up like Heston and others. My guess is Sabean is not betting the farm on Blach.

By the way, anyone know whether he pronounces it "Block" or Black" or some other way?

    5. I believe his name is pronounced "Block".

  2. I'd like to see Blach become another Kirk Rueter. MLB.com has the Giants taking Grant Holmes in their latest mock draft. He's a high school pitcher who reportedly has great stuff.
