Scouting the Draft: Day 3 Review

Unlike last year when the Giants loaded up on a lot of college guys, they drafted a surprising number of HS and JC players in the later rounds of this draft.  Whether that means they are feeling more aggressive for upside or merely punting the picks remains to be seen.  Let's break it down:

11.  Johneshwy Fargas, OF, Puerto Rico HS.  No stats on Fargas but just the name conjures up visions of future greatness.  He's a skinny slap and dash guy with plus-plus speed.  Outside chance he may fill out his frame and develop some power down the road.  Aaron Fitt of BA seems to really like him a lot.  Several Puerto Rico players taken in round 11 possibly indicating that organizations think they will sign for the approximately $100 K bonus that is allowed for each pick after round 10.

12.  Ty Ross, C, LSU.  Defensive catcher in the mold of Jackson Williams.  Hit just .211 this season for LSU. Has some power if he makes contact.

13.  Pat Young, RHP, Villanova.  2-8, 4.81, 82.1 IP, 34 BB, 76 K.  Big pitcher listed at 6'5", 100 lbs. but the MLB scouting report says he is 6'7", 208 lbs.  Low 90's FB with a slider.  Has a changeup but rarely shows it.  High effort delivery.  Probably profiles as a reliever.

14.  Nick Jones, LHP, JC(AL).  6'6", 220 lbs.  No info.  Just a big 'ol Lefty.  Those are always intriguing.

15.  Eugene Escalante, C, Mount Olive College(NC).  No info.

16.  Jonah Arenado, 3B, HS CA.  6'3", 195 lbs.  Nolan's lil' bro.  Do the Giants think they can sign him here?  THAT would be something!

17.  Rene Melendez, C, HS PR.  6'1", 190 lbs.  Another Puerto Rican HS prospect.  No info.

18.  Christian Jones, LHP, Oregon.  6'3", 210 lbs.  1-1, 3.42, 23.2 IP, 11 BB, 20 K's.  TJ surgery in 2012.  College reliever in 2013.  High 80's FB, slider, change combo with good feel for pitching may profile more as a starter.

19.  Garrett Hughes, LHP, Stanford(Sr).  6'8", 245 lbs.  2-2, 2.08, 34.2 IP, 18 BB, 36 K's.  The Giants do like to take their flyers on big pitchers.

20.  Brett Kay, SS, Illinois St(Sr).  5'11", 165 lbs.  .301/.409/.412 3 HR, 10 SB, 32 BB, 45 K.  Another good K/BB hitter.

21.  William Simpson, RHP, JC(OK).  6'4", 210 lbs.

22.  Ethan Miller, RHP, San Diego St(Sr).  6'5", 220 lbs.  5-3, 3.28, 49.1 IP, 23 BB, 52 K's.

23.  Brandon Zajac, LHP, JC(TN).  6'4", 210 lbs.

24.  Nick Gonzalez, LHP, South Florida(Jr). 6'4", 220 lbs.  3-4, 3.63, 86.2 IP, 37 BB, 77 K's.

25.  Blake Miller, SS, Wester Oregon St(Sr).  6'3", 195 lbs.

26.  Jake McCasland, RHP, New Mexico(Jr).  6'2", 220 lbs.  1-1, 4.74, 19 IP, 10 BB, 16 K.  McCasland and the Giants have a history of haggling over a contract out of HS, but are reportedly on good terms and he expects to sign.

27.  Michael Connoly, RHP, Maine-Orono(Jr).  6'0", 190 lbs.

28.  Dusten Knight, RHP, Texas Pan American(Sr).  6'0", 180 lbs.

29.  Ryab Tuntland, 3B, West Virginia(Sr).  6'1", 195 lbs. .325/.416/.425, 3 HR, 7 SB, 29 BB, 35 K's.  Again, we see the nice K/BB.

30.  Dylan Brooks, RHP, HS Canada.  6'7", 230 lbs.  This begins the run on HS players who may not be signable. This kid looks even bigger than listed size in scouting video.

31.  John Riley, C, HS, CA.  6'0", 210 lbs.

32. Nick Cieri, C, HS, NJ.  6'2", 215 lbs.

33.  Craig Massoni, 1B, Austin Peay St(Jr).  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 215 lbs.  .385/.475/.661, 16 HR, 6 SB, 36 BB, 44 K.  I'm thinking he will stay in school.

34.  Rayan Hernandez, RHP, HS PR.  6'4", 230 lbs.  This kid has a big league pitcher's body right now.  I have no idea about his signability, but the Giants can offer about $100 K just like the 11'th round pick.

35.  Aubrey McCarty, 1B, HS, GA.  6'3", 205 lbs.

36.  Grand Goodman, RHP, HS CA.  6'3", 175 lbs.

37.  Will Callaway, 2B, Appalachian St(5S).  6'0", 190 lbs.  .344, 4 HR, 8 BB, 32 K in 215 AB.  He's 23 years old.

38.  Osvaldo Garcia, RHP, HS FL.  5'11", 185 lbs.

39.  Christopher Viall, RHP, HS CA.  6'9", 230 lbs.  You know I love big, tall pitchers.

40.  Ryan Kirby, OF, HS CA.  6'2", 175 lbs.

Flyers and filler, but if they can get Fargas and Arenado to sign, as well as the JC guys and even 1 or 2 of the HS flyers in the 30-40 range, it will make the overall draft look a lot better.  Don't hold your breath on any of the HS kids drafted from round 30 on, though.

  1. I think the Giants will try and tempt that local angle on John Riley (BA #150). With the HS guys stacked, you can make "first come gets the moneys" offer, once you've figured out exactly how overslot you can go.

Based only on where they were drafted, I bet Brooks/Riley/Cieri are the principle targets of grab a HS kid.

Vaill already said he's going to Stanford no matter what.

Maybe McCasland finally ditched his local lawyer rep, or the guy saw the light. Shoulda taken 200K 3 years ago? That's the way the CBA it putting on pressure methinks. Its knocking the demands of 2nd and 3rd tier guys out of the box, and standardizing the process.

But the main target on the HS front is Arenado, I love it at that spot in the draft.

    1. You know I would be ecstatic to get Brooks, though I know you are less excited by tall pitchers.

    2. I just noticed, both years the Gints have drafted Stanford and Vandy commits at the end. You think this is a coincidence? McCarty is definitely going to Vandy. The two hardest commits in our fair nation. Maybe UVA edges to make it a top 3. Interesting...

I liked the video on Brooks!

    3. I recall in an interview with Shilo McCall, who was represented by the same lawyer, while the lawyer did not admit any mistake and made a point about holding out for the right bonus, I recall him mentioning that he learned with McCasland that this was so much money, life changing money, on which I inferred that he would have changed how he handled the negotiations for McCasland had he the chance to go back, that mistakes were made. I think you remember that interview, you remember sooo much!

  2. I think I have found my sleeper player from this draft. I like Blake Miller the 6'3'' SS out of Western Oregon. He has hit close to .400 over the past 2 years with quite a few doubles and SB along with a close to 1:! BB to K ratio.

    1. There you go! It will be fun to follow him in the minors. It will be interesting to see who all signs and where they get assigned.

    2. Found some stats and an interview during his summer in the Alaska Baseball Leaguehttp://alaskabaseball.bbstats.pointstreak.com/player.html?playerid=310565

Also found out that he played for Sac State for 2 years from 2010-2011 with some success by leading the team in batting his sophomore year at .289

    3. That's great work there, Clint. He sounds like a great guy to root for.

  3. I would note that Jackson Williams hit .300-something in college, but hasn't done much of anything - as predicted by the experts - in the pros.

Very interesting draft, going with high schoolers to a degree that they normally don't do. That means that they didn't really think much of the college ranks in his draft, right?

Wow, McCasland, still, only the Giants believe.
