Down on the Farm: 5/9/2013

AAA  Nashville Sounds downed the Fresno Grizzlies 11-7:

Kensuke Tanaka(2B)- 0 for 3, 2 BB, SB(8).  BA= .347.
Brett Pill(1B)- 2 for 4, 2 HR(9), BB.  BA= .345.
Chris Dominguez(PH)- 1 for 1, HR(3).  BA= .275.

Gotta think if Belt continues to struggle, the Giants are going to have to notice that Pill is destroying the PCL, although we all know that is a dubious distinction.

AA  Altoona Curve edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-8:

Javier Herrera(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(9).  BA- .292.
Mark Minicozzi(3B)- 3 for 3, 2B, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .301.
Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .307.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .209.
Tom Vessella(LHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.16.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.03.

Squirrels finally get a game in and the hitters unleashed their frustrations.  Alas, it was not quite enough as errors contributed to the loss.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Bakersfield Blaze 6-2:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(7).  BA= .268.
Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .269.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .267.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB. BA= .268.
Bobby Haney(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .237.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.69.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.06.

Chris Marlowe allowed 10 walks in his first two starts, but only 4 in his last 4.  Osich is starting to dominate. He has 6 consecutive scoreless appearances.  He has 7 K's against 0 BB's in his last 3 1-inning stints.  Mac is hitting .368 over his last 10 games.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets stung the Greenville Drive 6-3:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, BB, 2 SB(18).  BA= .272.
Shayne Houck(DH)- 1 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .357.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.03.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(9).  ERA= 0.00.

Galindo is running wild!  Solid start for Stratton, though not as dominant as we might like to see from a college first rounder at this level.  Tough expectations!  Is Mizenko ever going to give up a run?

  2. To me, I would rather put Pill at 1B and start Belt in LF, than to replace Belt at 1B with Pill.

Excited to see Osich doing well, he's the guy I'm targeting this season for a huge jump in the prospect ranks if he can just stay healthy. With his stuff, he should be great in any role in the pitching staff.

    1. Why would you move Belt to LF when he can't hit well enough to stay in the lineup at all? If they are going to try to upgrade the Torres/Blanco platoon, I would rather see them give Pegs an extended look and Roger K if Pegs doesn't work out. The other possibility is a trade to upgrade LF.

    2. Because he's doing no worse than TorLanco offensively, and while TorLanco is what one would expect to get from them, Belt is under-performing at the moment and thus we could expect him to regress some to his performance last season when he was OK offensively. And Belt has played OF before and should be able to be good enough defensively in LF, perhaps plus, while Pill is getting a try out in the majors at 1B where he is very good defensively (Snow once said best in system). If that fails, then Belt can move back to 1B, then Pegs and Roger K get their tries, for it's not like Pegs is burning up the bats right now either.

    3. That's great, ogc. I'm tellin' you right now. Belt is going to either make it at 1B or not at all. I'm starting to think Belt may not be underperforming anyway. He has spurts where he seems to close up those massive holes in his swing but then regresses back into old habits. Not quite ready to write him off, but if Pill keeps doing what he's doing at Fresno and Belt keeps doing what he's doing in SF, I think his leash is going to be a bit short in the near future.

    4. ogc,

"TorLanco's" composite slash line so far this season is .267/.325/.333 for an OPS of .658 with 5 SB.

Belt's slash line is .222/.289/.352 for an OPS of .641.

Add in that "TorLanco" gives you plus defense by UZR in LF while Belt's career UZR in LF is in negative territory.

Statistically, Brandon Belt would not be an upgrade in LF over "TorLanco."
