  1. Jeff Arnold's emergence and Susac finding another gear, coupled with the backup catcher types in Frenso might make Catcher a lower priority in the draft. Very interesting development. Duvall got all the hype, but another Louisville product got popped as well! The Giants love their senior sleepers.

A quick glace at Louisville this year - Coco Johnson is a JC transfer Jr OF hitting 324/427/508 with 20/29 SBs and 17BB/24K. Ty Young and Cole Sturgeon are also Jrs, hitting well, particularly Young with a 357/441/546 and 26/31 SBs and 23BB/27Ks. All 3 have high HBP, which might just be a false positive in college ball where pitchers just don't have command and coaches encourage a little lean in.

The Giants really like that school lately.

I think Kickham is going to get the call. 5 straight starts with good stuff. It certainly lines up from the rest part of the equation.

    1. Yeah, really nice 5 starts, and really 7 nice starts as the two before, while a lot of runs given up, he had bad luck with runs in one, then got BABIPed in the second, otherwise, great K's and low walks. In the 5 starts, 32.0 IP, 24 hits, 9 BB, 29 K, 1.69 ERA, 8.2 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 3.22 K/BB, all really great stats, particularly for a hitter's league.

I didn't think so before, but now that I'm looking at the numbers, I don't see how they don't promote him at some point.

So the question now becomes this: who will the Giants drop from the 40 man to put Kickham on it?

And I feel so bad for Surkamp, this would have been an ideal situation for him to get an extended trial, but the injury took him out of the equation. Reminds me a lot of Frandsen, he was going to get his big chance to start and blew out his Achilles just before the season started, giving the extended audition to that Pirates infielder, then Pablo grabbed it and never let go.

About catching, if another Susac type falls to the Giants, I have to think that they draft him. I think the Giants focus a lot on middle of the field types, and if they see one that they like, they will pull the trigger.

Speaking of catching, Tommy Joseph has not been doing well at all in AAA for the Phillies. Odd thing is that his strikeout rate is fine, so maybe it is a matter of bad luck with the BABIP. Though maybe he has been injured, he only has 21 games played so far, anybody know what's up with him?

So you are saying that the Giants like Louisville Sluggers?

Yeah, but sometimes it is the hitter, Brown has continued to collect HBP big time in the pros as well.

    2. Personally, Abreu would be the guy to cut. We have Noonan and Arias, and neither are getting much play. Plus, Jurica seems to be the jack of all trades. At this point, can't he play all IF positions and OF too? If so, I just don't see the need for a guy like Abreu. Maybe that's harsh, but he just seems way more fungible than Surkamp who could still have some value.

    3. I agree with PiLamBear. Abreu is injured, I doubt some team will take a snag (well, you'd have to see what hyperactive Toronto is up to I suppose). Try and sneak him through, and if they lose him, no big shakes, the Docs will get a break.

    4. Good point about Abreu, I had forgotten about him. But isn't there some rule about releasing injured players, won't the Giants have to work out some sort of settlement with him first? Of course, at this point, doubt any team would touch him anyway, so he might be willing to work out some sort of favorable arrangement for the Giants, where he at least still rehabs with Giants until another team signs him or he signs a minor league deal with the Giants.

    5. Andrew Baggarly today: The general thought among club officials is that Kickham isn’t ready for the big leagues, but he could be deemed their best choice under the circumstances –- especially if Gaudin is needed in long relief between now and Tuesday.

What do they look at beyond the numbers?

    6. They don't need to release of DFA anyone, they could just move Surkamp/Abreu to the 60 Day DL which frees up a 40 man spot.

  2. Hey Doc,

Do you think the Giants will try to make Osich a starter again? I remember the big concern about him was his durability, but he's dominating in relief and it'd sure be nice to have another arm that could start a game.

    1. I'd like to see that. Seems like a waste talent to consign Osich to a LH reliever role already in his pro career, but Osich is no record last year as saying he feels more comfortable pitching out of the bullpen.

  3. Arnold has a strong arm too.

Saw he throw out like, 3 of 4 guys trying to steal 2nd, in a game last week. I am no expert but he looked to take a bit long to throw, and yet, still nailed almost all of them.
