Down on the Farm: 5/15/2013

AAA   Fresno Grizzlies were idle.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels out hit the Harrisburg Senators 7-6:

Javier Herrera(LF)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(10).  BA= .281.
Andrew Susac(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(5).  BA= .276.
Brett Krill(RF)- 1 for 3, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .271.
Mark Minicozzi(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .301.

Hey, how about a C/1B rotation with Susac and Posey alternating days?

High A  San Jose Giants edged the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4-3:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .264.
Elliott Blair(CF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .228.
Ryan Cavan(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .342.
John Polonius(2B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 2.27.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.90.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.96.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(7).  ERA= 1.00.
Ted Lilly(LHP, Quakes)- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

Hey!  Look who shows up in SJ.  John Polonius was signed as an undrafted FA SS out of indy ball last year.  He played 2B in this one.  We'll watch this.  A move to 2B would be disappointing. Polonius takes Myles Schroder's spot as he goes on the DL.  Count Ty Blach as one the the pitching success stories in the early going this season.  Gotta dig that K/BB part of the line.  He has a ridic 3 BB's in 39.2 IP with an 11/1 K/BB.  Dodgers are counting on Ted Lilly to come off the DL next week.  He's done, I tell you, he's done!  Dang!  I didn't realize the lads were in RC last night.  I would have liked to see Blach pitch!

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets topped the Rome Braves 5-4:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .296.
Shayne Houck(DH)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .319.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(11).  BA= .299.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 7 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Brandon Farley(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 2.73.

Galindo has become a fixture in the highlights.  You'd like to see a bit more dominance from Stratton at this level.

  1. It seems like Susac may force some decision making in the next year or two. He won't hit like Posey, which makes his value as a first baseman less than if he remained at catcher. And if Susac can call a game and receive pitches well, Belt may want to start taking some reps in LF and stay hot with the bat.

  2. Giants have a lot of good pieces for a trade. And I think they will make one.

  3. Why give up on Belt? The guy is young, and he just needs to figure it out. We'd be far better wtih belt at 1b (he's defensively very good) and rested catchers of Posey and Susac. And sure, Belt can sit once in a while too. I just don't see the need to make it either/or.

Our pitching is sick. Just sick. The only unfortunate thing is we really need 1-2 guys next year (I don't see Timmy re-signing) and we're a year short of that. But in two years... wow.

    1. Yea, in a couple years, we have some SERIOUS reinforcements coming for the rotation. I am nervous to think which of them will need to be dealt away in order to keep the rotation alive for the next 2 or 3 years, though. We will definitely need to bring in AT LEAST one face from outside the org for next (this?) year.

    2. Relievers, maybe.

Hembree - doing well, coaches may be able to tell us more if his offspeed pitches are ready.

Dunning - doing well, don't know much about his stuff and how well it can be translated. I hope he can do it.

Osich - doing well. Arm is healing just fine. Maybe he can be a starter again.

I don't know if there are other relievers who are not more than 2 years away. Dunnington - where is he now?

Starters ? I hope Crick doesn't lose more development time. When is he coming back?

Can Surkamp come back soon? How well will he do, once completely healthy? Heston - can he be an effective 5, based on his PCL numbers? Same with Kickham, who seemed to be given a lower priority than Heston this past spring training. Blackburn needs to show more to be considered 2 years away, I think. Maybe Marlowe.

    3. I feel bad for Surkamp. This is his window of opportunity, and he is not healthy. Heston and Kickham are healthy and they have en excellent opportunity. They'd better make the most of it.

    4. Usually I'm the guy who's all sunshine, puppydogs and ice cream - but I have to say fellas: Ainsworth Foppert Williams (and Noah Lowry). TINSTAAAAPPPPP!

That dirty dozen rotation looks good for sure though.

And then there's the dirty dozen high octane bullpen arms as well.
