This game showed the darkside of the the Opener strategy as the Opener gave up 3 runs in the first inning without recording an out. Think about that for awhile. Key Lines:
Patrick Bailey PH/C- 1 for 1. BA= .265. Bailey continues to produce in a number of roles. This time it was as a RH PH for Joc Pederson, a gutsy call by Kap if there ever was one. Bailey picked his manager up with a leadoff single and scored ahead of Wilmer's HR.
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 3, HR(15), HBP. BA= .310. Much like last season about this time, Wilmer again finds himself all but carrying the team. His HR was the only XBH of the game for the Giants.
Luis Matos PH/CF- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .242. Matos keeps passing they eye test even though the WAR numbers don't seem to agree. He's had a lot of hard hit balls get caught on the warning track. Probably a good idea to use the offseason to get stronger.
Scott Alexander LHP has had some nice moments so we won't embarrass him by posting his line but oof! That is not the way to Open a game!
The Loss drops the Giants 5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, but they and the Phillies are tied in the race for the first Wild Card Playoff spot leading the Cubs and Reds by 3 games.
The Giants try for a series win tomorrow evening with TBD facing The Great One who several Giants players are openly recruiting to sign with them this offseason.
Churn Watch:
AJ Pollock OF left tonight's game with tightness in his side. You don't say! Brandon Crawford SS also left the game early when Mark Matthias PH for him. I have not seen any comments about an injury for Crawford so maybe it was just one of Kap's PH moves.
Re Matos WAR: Both Fangraphs and B-R downgrade his defense a huge amount which overrides his positives. Fangraphs gives him negatives for both arm and range.
