DrB's 2023 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #22 Adrian Sugastey

 Adrian Sugastey C.  DOB:  10/23/2002.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 210 lbs.  IFA 2020- $525 K.

2022(ACL):  .231/.323/.346, 12.9 BB%, 16.1 K%, 31 PA.
2022(A):  .240/.329/.333, 5 HR, 8.8 BB%, 15.6 K%, 340 PA.
2022(AFL):  .385/.429/.852, 2 BB, 1 K, 28 PA.

Young catching prospect with a big arm and a projectable bat.  Put up solid, if unspectacular numbers for at Low A SJ last season, but development time is still on his side.  Performed well in a SSS against higher level competition in the Arizona Fall League.  On video, he has a no-frills, short swing keeping his front elbow tucked which bodes well for the future at higher levels.  Could start 2023 repeating at SJ and still be at an age-appropriate level but his AFL performance suggests he might handle A+ ball just fine.

  1. It's certainly interesting to compare this year's Top 50 with last year's – no, it's not easy!
Perhaps 1 through 13 or so were "easy": Bart, Doval, and Hjelle graduated, plus reaching down to pluck Villar.
Jumping #5 to #1 was straightforward as was dropping Ramos way down from #4, and eviscerating Bednar & Bishop with big drops, but then came the disappearances: Murphy and Ragsdale (too far?), Genoves, Rincones, Toribio, Teng, Castro, Smith, Franchette, Pierre, Vinicio, Mercedes, Corry, Munguia, Nurse, Roby, Tostado, Wyatt, Gudino, Whiteman, and Frisbee – some to Honorable Mention, some plucked by Rule 5, but many to oblivion, plus those (Santos, Berroa, & ??) traded away.
All which left lots of places for new faces: 2022 Draft, trades and Churn, FA signings, and who knows where FZ found them with more coming nearly every day!
This had to be the hardest rating you've had to do, what a great job!
Although the Giants prospects as a whole are not rated especially well by many critics, there appears to be lots of playable guys in the list, and there's a person in management who may well get vindicated in the next few years.
Even after the Top 25, there's a sleeper @ 26, Keaton Winn, with lots of potential value, all the way to the end: if #50 can drop his K's by just 1 in 9 and stay healthy, he'll be a Giant.
    And at least 5 catchers!

    1. Thank you, Theseus. Despite the ongoing disappointments with several first round draft picks, I believe this list is stronger and much deeper than last year's list.
