  1. Report from Valley Strong Ballpark in Visalia: It was definitely a pitchers' duel with one run, 7 hits total, only one hit by the Rawhide and 38 strikeouts with only 3 walks! Nick Sinacola, 7th round pick in '21, started, went 4 innings and gave up the only hit. He threw 41 of 60 pitches for strikes, striking out 9. His fastball sat at 92 MPH and his off-speed stuff at 83-85 MPH. Keaton Winn relieved him, went 2 innings, threw 23 of 34 pitches for strikes and struck out 5 while walking one. He hit 95 MPH with his fastball and 85-88 MPH on his off-speed stuff. He was followed by Trevor McDonald, 11th round pick in '19. He threw 19 of 32 pitches for strikes, striking out 5. He hit 95 MPH with his fastball and 79 - 88 on various off-speed pitches. Tyler Myrick, 14th round pick in '21, finished the game, throwing 7 of 10 pitches for strikes, striking out one. He hit 96 MPH with his fastball.

The SJ Giants had a couple of staff or ball players sitting in the stands with laptops. On the laptops there was a box that showed MPH. I believe the information was being recorded from several cameras that were placed in the stands directly behind home plate. I was not sitting behind them, but when each of the Giants pitchers were on the mound, I walked over to where I could see the screens of their laptops, which is where I obtained the MPH on the pitches being thrown. The laptops also were collecting additional information. One box had numbers like 211, 222, 207 - I have no idea what that related to. Another box had numbers like -3, -7, again, not sure that that represented. What is clear, is that the Giants are collecting information on every pitch thrown by the SJ Giants pitchers, and I imagine that they are doing so for each of their minor league clubs.

I was also at the game yesterday, and watched Eric Silva, Esmerlin Vinicio, Manuel Mercedes, Evan Gates and Julio Rodriguez pitch. Silva, Vinicio and Mercedes are each 19 years old. Here are my observations on the teenagers:

Eric Silva – pitched effectively, if a bit wild at times. 25 of 46 pitches were strikes.

He gave up a no-doubt homerun to Visalia first baseman Shane Muntz, listed at 6’4” and 240 lbs. I give his height and weight to contrast that of the second SJ Giants pitcher – Esmerlin Vinicio.
Mercedes had a hard time throwing strikes. 30 of 58 pitches were strikes. He walked 4. I only saw one off-speed pitch thrown for a strike. His fastball was sitting at 93-94 MPH and most of them were fouled off. He loaded the bases and on a slow grounder up the middle he muffed it at first and then fired a fastball past the first baseman, allowing an extra run to score.
Esmerlin Vinicio - DOB: 1/31/2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – listed at 6’2’ and 141 pounds. He looked every bit of 141 pounds – barely filling his baseball uniform. He threw a lot of off-speed stuff, but he threw strikes – 16 of 20 pitches were strikes. APGiantsfan

  2. Who will make Alex Cobb's start Saturday?
    Obvious candidates are:
From the roster there's Sam Long and Tyler Beede.
From Sacramento there's Sean Hjelle and Jakob Junis, both on the 40-man roster.
Is Raynel Espinal in the mix? He's pitched well in 2 Sacramento starts, but he's not on the 40-man roster. At 30-yo, he's kicked around the minors a long time.
Bet on Long and a bullpen game?
