Hot Stove League Update: Kevin Gausman Gone

Late news today as free agent signings continued at a frantic pace to beat the lockout(which really should tell everybody the lockout is completely silly and unnecessary).  Kevin Gausman is reportedly signing a 5 yr/$110 M contract with the Blue Jays.  He's getting paid and he deserves it.  I tend to think the Giants got the two best years of his career, but we'll see.  Giants do need another frontline SP.  If it's not Gausman, then who?  Marcus StromanMax Scherzer(who is rumored to be close to signing with the Mets)?  Robbie Ray?  They all have their warts.  Maybe FZ is sure he can find the next Kevin Gausman on another 1 year deal?  The Hot Stove sizzles on!

  1. In all honesty, I don't think he'll be missed. Great pitcher, first half. Fell off the cliff after the all star break. Gave nothing really, in the post season.

    1. His second half and postseason performances definitely make you hesitant to make him your longterm top-of-the-rotation guy.

  2. The Giants now HAVE a 4-man rotation (almost) signed with a couple possibles after the lockout.
Before Wood and Cobb are finalized, they have 21 pitchers on the 40-man, at least 5 of whom have been SPs.
They'll need a couple 40-man subtractions before tomorrow afternoon.
Like most Giants' fans, I have come to trust Farhan Zaidi, Scott Harris and Gabe Kapler to do what's best for SF and not throw big $$ on long contracts. We don't know how much for how long they were willing to spend on Gausman but we know they could have but didn't. Gausman is good, he will be missed, but he's not a game changer, unlike Bryce Harper for whom the Giants were willing to go to the max. It is said that he didn't want to be part of a rebuild — the Giants have out performed the Phillies since he made that choice.

  3. Pitchers are going fast...what about Cueto 1YR/8-12 million with incentives or will he get a multi year deal in this market?

    1. As a fading 36-yo, he needs a 1-year "prove it" contract, more in the $2-5M range. For 4-8M, Zaidi could bring in 3 or 4 "prove-it's"!

    2. Could be a $2-5 M with incentives.

    3. Yes, that would work: it is allowed to base incentives on number of innings pitched, number of games started, number of relief appearances, number of games finished, etc.
