Game Wrap 6/27/2021: A's 6 Giants 2

The Giants gave a languid performance in their series finale agains the A's in a game that was not as close as the final score might make you think.  Game Notes:

There is really very little to say about this game.  Historically the Giants tend to struggle against pitchers they have not previously faced and against soft tossers.  Cole Irvin LHP had both factors going for him and became only the third SP to complete 7 innings against the Giants this season and the second to complete 8.

Giants SP, Sammy Long LHP, did not pitch badly while overcoming a rocky first inning to get the game into the 6'th.  As weak as the Giants bats were against Irvin, it would have been tough to win this game no matter how well he pitched.

The Dodgers and Padres both won so the Loss cut the Giants lead in the NL West to 3.5 games over the Dodgers and 4.5 over the Padres.  The Giants maintain the best record in MLB.

*************************************************************************************

The Giants travel south for a two game series against the division rival Dodgers tomorrow evening with Anthony DeSclafani RHP facing the hated Trevor Bauer RHP.

*************************************************************************************

Logan Webb RHP threw a 20 pitch simulated game and is expected to start a rehab assignment from shoulder soreness soon.  No new news on Brandon Belt 1B but he is not expected to have a short stay on the IL.

    1. Maybe ouch, maybe not: Bailey has had troubles with his back and his bat; and dealing with both in the course of a competitive season may be a bit much for someone so close to the start of his career. He may be in Arizona for some intensive work with coaches in a more relaxed, less complicated environment. That would be a non-ouchy explanation: a temporary remediation of a problem.

    2. Agree with Campanari here especially since the Giants coaching staff seems to have found a way to teach that makes a difference. Better to take a step back for more intensive tutoring than be left to sink or swim while continuing the current practices that don't seem to be working.

    3. Too soon to conclude anything after whatever 2020 was!
Bailey is still MLB's top catcher in that class.

  2. I like the way the Giants are promoting players who are showing that they can handle the current level, ie. Armani Smith to High A, Jairo Pomares to Low A, Chris Wright to High A, R.J. Dabovich and Caleb Kilian to AA and Matt Frisbee to AAA, along with Sammy Long to AAA then the majors. Genoves deserves the promotion, especially if Bailey needs some fine-tuning in instructional. 3. Lose early and ugly, don't waste hitting or pitching. BE HUNGARY going into LA, not complacent.
After 77 games (halfway in the olden golden days):
    2021 50-27 3.5 games ahead of Dodgers
2016 49-28 8.0 games ahead of Dodgers who finished 1st
Cubs were 48-26 (June 26, 2016) with the best record, percentage points ahead of the Rangers @ 49-27.
Which was the better Giant team?
The Giants "could have" won 2016 but didn't because they went for Moore and not a closer?
