Wilmer Flores 3B' 2-run HR capped a 4-spot in the first inning which allowed Anthony DeSclafani RHP and two relievers to cruise to a shutout. Game Notes:
Flores got off to a slow start this season hitting just .214 in April. That improved to .263 in May. He's hitting .314 so far in June with 4 of his 7 HR's.
Mike Yastrzemski RF went just 1 for 5 in the game but his first inning single with one out got the 4-run rally started.
A safety squeeze bunt by Brandon Belt 1B with Darin Ruf LF at 3B ended up as a hit and an RBI when the ball hugged the 3B line all the way to the bag. Wow! Look up the video, team! It's a thing of beauty.
Brandon Crawford SS had 3 hits and a walk but did not figure in the scoring.
Mauricio Dubon CF had 2 hits including a HR to add a run in the second inning. He's hitting a sizzling .462 over his last 7 games(13 AB).
Anthony DeSclafani RHP(No, JT Snow, Disco is NOT a cool nickname!) is making his own case to be an All-Star Selection. His line for the night was 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. He is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in Juneafter getting roughed up in his last two starts in the month of May. Overall his record stands at 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA.

ReplyDeleteMike Trauchman has made significant contributions to the Giants this year. He will forever be remembered for snatching a victory from the Dodgers that led to a team resurgence.
ReplyDeleteOTOH can a team competing for the playoffs carry a player who, however good in the field, can't hit consistently?
The TV talkers say he can't be passed through waivers – but, seriously, would a team load their playing roster for him or any 30 year-old who has splits .116/.191/.209/.401 in June and .169/.285/.269/.554 for the season?
What's with pulling Duggar for a RH batter? He has better stats against LHB than the PH has! Can taking your best OFer out to gain a lesser outcome be argued? Or doesn't Kapler know?
Duggar's LHB split is way too small sample size to base anything on right now. Especially compared to his career splits, which is not good against LHP. He has a long minor league track record of splits as well. Granted, he does look a lot more comfortable and confident against LHP this year but splits are usually not something that changes overnight. I think it'll take at least 100 AB against LHP for Duggar's split numbers to stabilize and show whether his renewed LHB approach is for real or just small sample size noise.
DeleteTrauchman reminds me of Juan Perez. Little bat, which can surprise, from time to time. Great glove. Worthy of a roster spot, for now.
DeleteI like that Belt bunted with 2 outs, for a hit against the shift, to drive in Ruff and set the table for Flores to hit a 2-run homer. This was another instance with the Giants having success against a young pitcher who handled them easily in an earlier outing. They were often swinging at first pitches, knowing that Andrew Heaney often throws first-pitch strikes. Belt bunted on the first pitch. Flores homered on the first pitch and Dubon homered on the first pitch. They were fortunate to strike early, as the home-plate umpire had a mighty wide strike zone. They also handled Ohtani pretty well as a hitter - hopefully they have success against him as a pitcher.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the end of the Emeralds game, which ended in a wild fashion. The Ems closer, Chris Wright, who is averaging over 2 strikeouts per inning pitched, gave up a triple, allowing 2 runs to score, which should have tied the game. However, the Ems appealed by having Wright throw the ball to 3rd base with Roby touching the base, and the home plate umpire called one of the 2 runners out for failing to touch 3rd base = game over. Wilson's homerun went 420 feet with 106 MPH off the bat. :) APGiantsfan
