Game Wrap 6/1/2021: Angels 8 Giants 1

This was clearly an off night for Giants SP Alex Wood LHP who got battered for 7 runs in 3.2 IP while struggling with command and control, but the biggest story of the night might be the mounting injury toll on the roster as Curt Casali C hit the IL before the game and Mike Yastrzemski RF appeared to suffer a significant sprain of his thumb while trying for a catch up against the brick wall in RF.  Game Notes:

Wood couldn't throw either of his secondary pitches for strikes and as Kap put it, the results speak for themselves.  Given Wood's long injury history, we have to hope it was just an off night and not the result of a nagging physical deficit.

Steven Duggar PH/CF replaced YtY and rapped out 2 more hits in 3 AB's to raise his BA to .324 so the Giants have an able replacement, but the bench keeps getting thinner and thinner.  They still have Alex Dickerson PH and LaMonte Wade Jr PH to fill in from the 26 man active roster.  Looking at the 40 man roster, it looks like Jason Vosler IF/OF and Thairo Estrada IF are the only two healthy position players left other than Joey Bart C and Alex Canario OF

Speaking of Joey Bart, He's been out on an extended IL stint and needs more AB's in AAA so Chadwick Tromp C was called up to replace CasaliCasali's injury is apparently a nagging wrist pain stemming from offseason hamate surgery.

Conner Menez LHP 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's replaced Scott Kasmir LHP who was placed on the Restricted List to attend to a family matter.  Dominic Leone RHP 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's has been pitching well in Sacramento and was added to the 40-man roster to replace Sam Delaplane RHP who as expected was placed on the 60-day IL.  Nick Tropeano RHP was rewarded for his 2 scoreless innings of work on Monday with a trip back to Sacramento to make room for Leone.

Got all that?

The good news is Evan Longoria 3B seems to have a "very mild" intercostal strain and may be ready to play Thursday after a much needed off day today.

The Padres and Dodgers both lost so the Giants remain in first place in the NL West by 0.5 games despite the L.  Us fans will have to hope this was a blip and not the beginning of a "June Swoon."  The mounting injuries are a concern, though.

*************************************************************************************

The Giants get a much needed day off today before starting a big 4-game home series against the Cubs with Anthony DeSclafani RHP facing TBD on Thursday.

Remember the Giants trade for Mike Tauchman OF?  They completed that deal by sending Connor Cannon 1B/DH to the Yanks as the PTBNL.
