Preseason Update: Menez Stretches Out

The headline on sfgiants.com was Tony Watson LHP made his is preseason re-debut after rehabbing a left shoulder injury.  He threw a scoreless inning with 2 K's, but his FB topped out at 88 MPH.  Yikes!  Starting the season in less than a week as the Closer might be a tad optimistic.

A much bigger story in my mind was Conner Menez LHP going a full 3 innings with 5 K's.  Right now, he would make a really nice second half of a tandem starter combo, which is what it appears he is being groomed for.  His 3 innings followed 3 by Jeff Samardzija  RHP in this game.

Joey Bart and Hunter Pence hit B2B HR's off Andrew Suarez LHP, who is also a candidate to be a back-end tandem starter. Wow!  The drumbeat for Joey Bart to make the team just keeps getting louder and louder!

  1. Speaking of drumbeats, according to MLBTR: Yasiel Puig Tests Positive For Coronavirus; Deal With Braves Reportedly Off!
Although reportedly asymptomatic, he'll require 2 negative tests before he can join a team.
There's still a chance he could become a Giant and mess with Jaylin Davis, Steve Duggar, or Austin Slater chances. Or Jose Siri?
The SF outfield is somewhere between what could be had dumpster diving and a garage sale, led by 3 very-soon-to-be 30-yr olds: YtY, "Glassman" Dick, and Billy Fly plus their older brother, the much beloved Hunter Pence.
Got to wonder if the OF played a part in Posey's decision.
This is a suspect team with potentially good pitching if they can find a closer.
Tyler Rogers? He'll be 30 in December.

  2. The Giants would be foolish to let Bart start the year on the team and if they can hold him back until next year halfway through the season or longer, it would give them control through the 2027 season. There is no reason to rush him at all and fans should understand this very clearly.

It is frustrating that management has to play the game and make excuses as to why Bart isn't ready but if they admit to holding him back just to keep his clock from starting there would be lawsuits. Seems like they need to find a solution in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement so that players like Bart and Bryant and Acuna can be compensated for pushing their clocks out a year.

As Giants fans we should be thrilled to be in this situation. When a player makes this much noise and causes management to do the "he needs more development" dance it just means we have a future superstar on our team.

  3. According to MLBTR:
"With the shortened schedule, teams need only keep their top prospects off the major league roster for the first 6 games to secure an additional year of team control down the road."
    That quote is embedded in:

If true, that provides a LOT of time at the ML level for rookies.

  4. Let's say the Giants make the 2020 'playoffs' and even go deep. Is there any money in it with empty stadiums and diminished interest with stars having opted out? It makes it a good case to hold off on Bart and the young stars - what point is there in playing them in 2020 and wasting a year of their clock when you might get hold off and get some real return in 2027?

  5. US says Play Ball!
    Canada says NO!
    Who's right?
According to CDC, healthy under 35's without an underlying condition have a near zero mortality risk even with the virus.
Obviously there are familial consequences but can't a guy making 100's of K dollars live in a hotel for 60 days?
    The USA needs Baseball!

    1. Near zero is not zero and when you multiple whatever small percentage it is by the millions of people in that age group, the result is a large number. That's the part that many people, including apparently, our national leadership, don't seem to understand. I have personally participated in the care of 36 year old patient with no pre-existing conditions who suffered multi-organ failure including large areas of his skin sloughing off. I don't know what ultimately became of him, but I frankly doubt he survived.
