Game Wrap 7/28/2020: Padres 5 Giants 3

Jeff Samardzija gave up five runs on two bombs while the Giants offense continued to scratch out runs without benefit of the long ball.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski CF/LF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .353.  The Giants offense is really struggling to make hard contact.  They managed two doubles in this game but YtY's was a blooper down the LF line and Dubon's was a soft liner down the line that died about 2/3 of the way to the wall.  Statcast comfirms the impression of hard-hit futility as the Giants rank #37 out of 30 teams in average exit velocity, #30 in Hard Hit % and #29 in Barrel %.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.  ERA= 11.25.  Shark is gonna give up his dingers.  He's usually able to limit the damage with a low WHIP, but sequencing bit him hard in this game as all 5 baserunners he allowed scored on the 2 HR's he gave up.  Oh, and his FB topped out at 90 MPH and sat high 80's.  He's a couple of MPH off last year's average but Kap said it was improved from preseason.

Conner Menez LHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.50.  Menez got knocked around for 2 runs in 1 IP on Opening day, but was lights out for 3 innings while saving the bullpen for when the Giants get a lead.  He actually kept the Giants in this game enough to make you think they had a chance until the end.  I"m pretty sure this performance bought Menez at least a couple more.

Johnny Cueto tries to get the Giants back on the winning track tonight in his second start of the season facing RHP Chris Paddack.

The Giants designated Rob Brantly C for assignment and called up Chadwick Tromp C.  Tyler Heineman has emerged as the starting C and he's a switch-hitter, so it makes sense to have the second catcher hit RH with a little more pop than the redundant LH hitter.  Of course, this is all just placeholding until the Joey Bart era begins.

The Dodgers went to Houston, a current epicenter of the COVID pandemic.  As anticipated, Joe Kelly forced a couple of Astros hitters to dodge pitches then let them know what he thought in an extended jawing exercise as he walked off the field.  Also predictably, both benches emptied and they had a massive COVID exchange around home plate.  Look for the Dodgers and Astros to get shut down next which should pretty much shut down the whole season.

  1. There is one power guy that the Giants apparently have given up on in favor of a shiny new version.
Jaylin Davis now has almost as many major league PAs as Chris Shaw (50 v 82) and neither has much to brag about at the plate. Davis is 255 days younger and has better AAA numbers in far fewer PAs. Davis is a better OFer and runner. They both strike out a lot.

Perhaps because Davis is Zaidi's pick and Shaw is of the old guard, the die is cast against Shaw as against Duggar, two ships sailing away in the night.

My guy is better than yours!

With Belt out to begin the season, it could have been a time to see what lefthanded hitting Shaw could do, but the Chubby One got that gig and even has some hitless RH ABs.

No one is more "old guard" than Pablo - he and Pence won the nostalgia vote! The season is young, 2-3 is better than most expected, and the pitching with a few miscarriages has been interesting.
Would be nice to see some wallbangers!

  2. Again they put in Joe MaCarthy. I suspect Joe has something on Farhan or Kapler. There's no way he get in any MLB line up with his numbers.

  3. Surprisingly, the Phillies, their entire roster and staff tested negative for a second consecutive day, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan Twitter link.
Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal tweets that outside of yesterday’s Marlins positive, there wasn’t a positive test with any of the 29 other teams.

OTOH, among the Marlins, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports via Twitter the club’s total to an incredible 16 of the 33 players who traveled to Philadelphia for this past weekend’s series.

It can start with ONE. Poor club control by the Marlins created what many think is the inevitable outcome for the Leagues: more teams will get put out of commission by an internal epidemic without adequate controls.
With the tight schedule it's nigh impossible for a team to make up a week's games and their opponents will have a deficit which skews the standings, especially against teams that didn't get to play their games with the Marlins.
Perhaps the season isn't jeopardized by this one episode, but if it repeats, the season results are absurd.

  4. With minor league baseball season shutdown, what are all the players doing? Are they practicing in Arizona at the Giants facility, or is this truely a lost year of development?
