Game Wrap 5/29/2018: Rockies 6 Giants 5

The Giants failed to capitalize on a total of 5 baserunners in the 9'th and 10'th innings allowing the Rockies to win in a walk-off in the bottom of the 10'th.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 4, HR(6), BB, SB(3).  BA= .321.  Gorkys stays hot.  He appears to be having a breakout season.  The 6 dingers doubles his previous season high.

Evan Longoria 3B- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .259.  Longoria is 6 for 14 over his last 3 games raising his 7-game BA to .286.   He's hitting .297 over his last 15 games and .283 over his last 30.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 5.65.  Suarez settled down after giving up a 3-run dinger in the first inning.  He was actually dominant for the next 4 innings.  He looked like he could have pitched at least 1 more inning, but got lifted for a PH which resulted in the Giants go-ahead run in the top of the 6'th.

The Loss dropped the Giants 4 games behind the NL West leading Rockies and into 4'th place behind the Dodgers who topped the Phillies 5-4.  The D'Backs beat the Reds 12-5 and are 1.5 games behind the Rockies while the Dodgers remained 3.5 games back.  The Padres lost to the Marlins and are 7.5 games off the pace.

Jeff Samardzija tries to even the series tonight facing LHP Kyle Freeland.

  1. Maybe it was the midnight travel, a late start, the thin air, a hard turf, porous gloves, ill placed pitches, 3 errors (could have been 5), poor decisions, bad luck -- so many disappointments in one game, so many guys the Giants are relying on with miscues, every single player with an AB had a runner LOB (except Panda when the Giants went ahead) -- best to turn the page.
Wonder how many pages are left

  2. Have to play Gorky's because he is hot but still not a fan. Game still has holes and that throw of his to 3rd base last night was about as weak as I have seen. Also, always concerned about a guy who goes from basically no power, coming off an injury and his age to where he is now. That said, I understand why he is playing now but hope it doesn't preclude the Giants from upgrading there or even selling "high" on him if need be.

    1. Need to remember that his physical problem last season related to his hamate bone, which in the past, issues with it translated to inability to hit with power. So he was hampered last season.

That said, it is still a huge step up in power, so one has to wonder. Is there no history of power for him in the minors? For the most part, no, but he did hit 3 in 132 AB in 2012 at age 25, in the majors, which works out to a 12-15 homerun seasonal rate, so an uptick to 20 homers per season would seem reasonable. He's at a 30 HR pace, though, so expect some regression to mean there, just ride out the hot hand.

Still, he is reaching the age where players' power seem to take one last surge before they peter out, that was how Beane survived for a while, finding guys like that. He's not a big dude, but maybe he added on some weight since 2012, and with the new launch angle trend, it is not a wide divide between what he did in SSS in 2012 and doing now playing full time.

  3. Giants committed four errors -- three fielding and one on the basepaths that's not, technically, an error, but was. The Giants are currently rated 29th in errors with 41 and 27th in fielding percentage at .970.

In the OF Blanco, Jackson & Hernandez are all serious fielding drags. In the IF Panik (some) & Longoria (heavy) are both drags as is Sandoval (moderate). On the positive side, Belt, Posey Williamson & Crawford are all doing well. And McCutchen has stepped his fielding game up, though is still erratic, and is no longer a fielding drag (though not a great positive either). The rest are neutral.

Unless things change dramatically, this team is going to go nowhere since the young pitchers don't have what it takes to carry the load and Samardzija is scuffling mightily.

    1. Its tough to ask young pitchers like Blach, Stratton, and Suarez to carry so much of the load. Young pitchers tend to struggle and Bochy needs to show a lot of patience. They'll get better as they gain experience. Even young studs like Lucas Giolotto is struggling with the white sox. But I thought Suarez showed a lot of promise last night. The Giants might have won if Jackson could have done a little thing like getting a bunt down. Can't expect to win blowing 2 prime scoring chances in the 9th and 10th inning.

    2. A good OFer would have held onto the low liner that McCutchen coughed up.
No one is better than Craw, but he should have covered the ball on the steal.
If wasn't a stolen base, someone needed an error on that -- the throw or the catch and drop.
