Down on the Farm: 5/4/2018

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Sacramento River Cats 11-2:

Chris Shaw DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.
Jose Flores RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

Austin Slater went 1 for 2, but was ejected along with the River Cats manager immediately after striking out swinging in the 3'rd inning.  I'm guessing they did not like an earlier called strike that set up the swinging K?

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils outscored the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-6:

Ryan Howard SS- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .301.
Ronnie Jebavy CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .185.

Ryan Howard won't hit .300 wire-to-wire this year, but is back over the mark after this game.

A+  San Jose Giants outlasted the Lancaster Jethawks 7-6 in 10 innings:

Wander Franco 3B- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .283.
Heath Quinn LF- 4 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .326.
Matt Winn C- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .288.
Brandon Van Horn SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .223.
Mac Marshall LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.20.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.42.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.11.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 1 P, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.73.

The unearned run Ruotolo allowed was due to starting the 10'th inning with a runner on 2B after the Giants had scored 2 in the top of the inning.  Again, maybe ERA is an obsolete stat anyway, but to me the worst part of that rule is the havoc it plays with several traditional baseball statistics.  I suppose you could say the same thing about the DH, but it's still here after almost 50 years and is more likely to be eventually adopted by the NL than dropped by the AL.

Low A Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Heliot Ramos CF- 0 for 1.  BA= .211.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .275.
Jeffry Parra C- 2 for 2, 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .205.
Jason Bahr RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.82.
Peter Lannoo RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.24.

Heliot Ramos has been scuffling at the plate.  He came out of this game early apparently due to effects of an OF collision with Jean Angomas that sent Angomas to the hospital by ambulance with head injury.  I could not find an update on Angomas' condition.  The exit of the 2 OF's required some position changes that cost the GJ's their DH with P Jason Bahr entering the lineup in Ramos' leadoff spot.

  1. I think the runner on second is, for ERA purposes, an inherited runner and doesn't affect the pitchers ERA.
However, unlike an inherited runner, if he scores that must give that pitcher (who inherited MiLB's runner) the loss?
Thus, a reliever could come in the bottom of an extra inning in a tie game, give up a sacrifice and a medium fly ball, and get a loss for his efforts!
This makes the W-L stat for relievers meaningless for sure!

  2. Giant Potential Tweeted (words to the effect I didn't copy the exact tweet) that Angomas was released from the hospital and will be rejoining the Green Jackets today.

  3. Angomas has a concussion, but was reportedly doing well and in good spirits after the game. He joined the team at the hotel.
