Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .275.
Kyle Jensen 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .213.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.31.

This was Casey Kelly's 4'th QS out of 5, but the peripherals here are not encouraging.  Mark Melancon starts his rehab assignment.  4'th scoreless appearance in a row for Ray Black who has 9 K's against 1 BB in 4.1 IP in that span.  Free Ray Black!

A+ Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 5-4:

Peter Lannoo RHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.42.

Sandro Fabian's 8 Total Bases has to be the highlight of the night, down on the farm.  He's hit in 8 of his last 9 games, but this was the first multi-hit game in that stretch.  We'll see if this is a breakout game.

  1. Melancon came out after 3 batters -- is that his limit?
    Mac is in Chicago!
    By Alex Pavlovic:
Mac Williamson will join the team in Chicago, per a source, returning from a stint on the DL with a concussion. It was not immediately clear what the Giants would do to open a roster spot.

#SJGiants manager Lipso Nava on Melvin Adon's start (Wednesday): "I saw a big leaguer on the mound with that performance last night. I hope something clicked." Adon topped at 102 MPH yesterday, had command of three pitches. From Joe Ritso

  5. With Williamson brought up and Gorkys becoming a baby Babe Ruth, Slater gets blocked.
Blanco is safe because he's the only LHB.
Jackson is safe because G's will never eat his salary -- unlike Boston who dumped Ramirez before his 2019 vesting option cost them another $22,000,000 but they do pay him his full $22+ M 2018

    1. Gotta have at least a little respect for the Sox on that. Cold, hard math. They are eating a ton of $$$ On Hanley and Pablo. They are also 34-16.

    2. The Giants have dumped big money before, Rowand and Tejada, for latest examples that I can recall.

It is not going to kill Slater to stay in the minors for a while longer, plus, he's never hit like this before, so for all we know, this is just a BABIP blip. Has there been any analysis on his great season so far?

    3. ".....he's never hit like this before...." Not sure what your point is here, ogc. Here are Slater's BA's over his pro career:

      2014 SS Salem-Keizer: .347.
      2015 A+ San Jose: .292. AA Richmond: .296.
      2016 AA Richmond: .317. AAA Sacramento: .298.
      2017 AAA Sacramento: .321. MLB: .298.
      2018 AAA Sacramento: .375.

He may not have hit quite like this before, but he's hit darn well at every level and has consistently improved the longer he has played at each level. Considering his previous AAA and MLB experience, the .375 is not surprising or out of line with the upper end of expectations.

It may not hurt Austin Slater to stay in AAA longer, but it may be hurting the Giants.

    4. Red Sox had to clear space for Pedroia. They didn't want to be saddled with Ramirez' 2019 salary which would vest later this year.
Red Sox have been (somewhat) open about the decision process. It appears that Cora didn't want him.
BIG news is Robinson Cano's 80-day drug suspension -- shades of Melky! WTF, this is crazy! Robinson Canó? Whoddathunk?

    5. Well OGC...Both Tejada and Rowand were cut loose early Sept 2011. Rowand had $13 or $14 million coming to him, so that was a lot. Tejeda had a few weeks left on a 1-year deal, maybe $1 million for him. Hardly count that.

On the other had, Sox cut loose more like $57 million in Panda, and another Hanley $14 million in Hanley. So $70 million vs $14 million. Big difference.

  6. Maybe ogc’s pointis that Slater is now running a BABIP of over .400, which is unsustainable. He has a history of high BABIPs in the minors, where (I’m guessing) he learned to figure out the fledgling pitchers, and during his stay with the Giants last year, brief enough that the world-class pitchers hadn’t yet figured him out. But even so he hadn’t gone over .400. This year’s AAA performance looks shaky, therefore, to ogc (I think) and very likely to Giants management.

My own perspective, which may or may not jibe with ogc’s here, is that the default assumption one should make is that the Giants’ FO and on-field staff know what they are doing. One’s first question, then, should be: if the team is doing or is not doing X, what plausible rationale might they have for their choice of action? Ineligible answers to this question include: indifference, ingrained timidity, blockheadedness, and gross incompetence. These are answers that one finds on MCC or nbcsports.com, even sometimes though rarely from commenters on this blog or raisingmattcain. In the case of Slater just now, the Giants have had McCutchen hitting the ball hard and fielding RF okay, Hernandez hitting close to .300 and fielding close to acceptably, and the Williamson/Pence pair to evaluate. Jackson has improved at the plate, and complements Blanco as the RH reserve. While the team feels it must have at least a dozen pitchers, I don’t find surprising their decision to see for another month or two more if Slater is for real with the bat at Sacramento.

    1. You don't have to invoke BABIP to know that a .375 BA is probably unsustainable at any level. MY point is that 1. Slater has hit at least .290 at EVERY level and 2. That he already has both previous AAA and MLB experience, so he may well just be too good for the level.

As for why the Giants are not promoting him, right now it's most likely because they don't think he can start in CF in the majors and they already have Cutch and Mac starting in the corners and they don't want Slater sitting on the bench. I'm OK with that, but they also did utilize him when both Pence and Mac were injured and the options for LF were clearly inferior. We don't have to speculate on why they did that. Bochy stated it was because they preferred to keep the extra pitcher. Well, that extra pitcher was Jose Valdez. Does anyone here really think Jose Valdez made them a better team than Austin Slater would have?

Look, I am a supporter of both Brian Sabean, Bruce Bochy and Bobby Evans. I think that overall their process are sound. They have had a run of bad luck with injuries. And no, you cannot cover for every potential injury. On the other hand, I they are not perfect and not above criticism and I think they could have done better with their roster management during the time Mac and Pence were both out with injuries, specifically they should have brought Slater up to play LF.

    2. ....er, did NOT utilize him(Slater) when both Mac and Pence were injured....

  7. As to Valdez, DrB, I agree with you. A resuscitation of Merkin Valdez or the “Juan Valdez” from unfortunate 1980s Colombian coffee TV commercials would have been as helpful to the Giants.
