A new name is emerging as a top college pitcher for draft consideration, Missouri State RHP Pierce Johnson. His line against Creighton on Friday: 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 16 K. He's a 6'3", 180 lb RHP. Season stats: 2-3, 1.94, 46.1 IP, 16 BB, 66 K's. Missouri State has a reputation for developing pitching prospects. Giants LHP prospect, Mike Kickham, hails from there.
Michael Wacha RHP, Texas A&M, carried a perfect game into the 8'th inning against Pepperdine and ended up with a line of 9 iP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. His velocity ranged from 90-96 and held thoughout the game.
Baseball Prospect Report has a video up of a HS 5 tool guy I had only vaguely heard of before. Jameis Winston. Oh my yes! Klima really likes his projectability and so do I. Klima also likes the bat. He compares it to Ron Miller and Trey Williams except it's LH and with a better body.

Scouting the Draft: Day 2 Preview
Andy Seiler has a list of players from his pre-draft top 100 who are still on the board. Just find the link at the top of the column on the left and click on that. Thinking ahead about who the Giants may be looking at for their second round pick, #76 overall there are several names who might balance out the Brown pick nicely:
First of all, there are several names who many thought would go in the first round such as Stetson Allie and Brett Eibner. Austin Wilson is still on the board as is Yordy Cabrera. They should either be gone or considered extreme signability problems by the time the Giants turn comes up again.
Jedd Gyorko is the 10'th name on the list. Maybe the Giants were scouting him for the second round? He would be a nice balance to Brown. Looking farther down the list, there's Joe Leonard, 3B from Pitt and later Rob Segedin, a ferocious hitter from Tulane. They would balance the Brown pick with some power potential. Derek Dietrich is a possibility too. As for pitchers, there are a number of solid college arms including Kyle Blair, Addison Reed, Sam Dyson, Rob Rasmussen. They could pop for a high upside HS arm D'Andre Smelter too. Of course there's also Leon Landry,Tyler Holt and a whole host of CF types, but we already drafted Brown. I guess you can never have too many, right?

33. Astro: Michael Kvasnicka- switch hitting catching prospect. Was a steady riser on draft boards as the college season progressed.
34. Blue Jays: Aaron Sanchez- Second tier HS pitching prospect from Barstow, CA. Nice size at 6'4".
35. Braves: Matthew Lipka- Solid, if unspectacular HS athlete. Plays SS in HS, but may move to the OF.
36. Red Sox: Bryce Brentz- This is the first pick after #24 that I can honestly say I would have preferred the Giants take. Doesn't have the speed of Gary Brown, but the hit tool is much more solid and he has a much better arm. Only concern is with level of competition which was probably significantly higher for Brown. Great pick by the BoSox here who had a great first day of the draft.
37. Angels: Lindsey Taylor- HS SS. Don't know anything else about him. The Angels love to draft this kind of player.
38. Blue Jays: Noah Snydergaard- Big HS pitcher.
39. Red Sox: Anthony Ranaudo- May not be easy to sign. Some injury concern, although elbow stress reactions do not generally recur. Could be the steal of the draft here. We'll see if they get him signed.
40. Angels: Ryan Bolden- HS OF with nice size. Another typical Angels pick.
41. Blue Jays: Asher Wojciechowski- Jays get great value here. I wouldn't have complained if the Giants had taken him at #24.
42. Rays: Drew Vettleson- Two way HS player. Most scouts have him as a hitter. Pitches with both hands, like Pablo.
43. Mariners: Taijuan Walker- Raw HS RHP but with huge projection. I was hoping he might fall to the Giants in round 2. Obviously not!
44. Tigers: Nick Castellanos- The Tigers specialize in players who drop due to salary demands. They did it again this year with Castellanos. Not as much of a sure thing as, say, Rick Porcello a couple of years ago.
45. Rangers: Luke Jackson- HS RHP. Don't know too much about him. Fair size.
46. Cardinals: Seth Blair- RHP with similar profile from the same school as Mike Leake. Should be a very fast mover. Ceiling likely as a #3 starter.

25. Cardinals: Zack Cox- Many analysts called Cox the best pure college hitter in the draft. Possible reasons why he fell to the Cards include: 1. Limited power potential. 2. Poor defense with no real position, unlikely to stick at even 3B. 3. Bonus demands- He is a draft eligible sophomore giving him more leverage than juniors and is reportedly ready to use that leverage for Buster Posey money.
26. Rockies: Kyle Parker- As a starting D1 college QB, Parker is an elite athlete with power potential who projects to have the arm to play RF. Concerns are: 1. The hit tool, he only hit .255 in his soph season. 2. Signabillity. He has football as leverage. Hmm....I'm liking the Brown pick more.
27. Phillies: Jesse Biddle- Raw, projectability pick here. It's like the Phils didn't know what they wanted to do, so just went with the local kid with great size and a decent arm. Not a great pick here.
28. Dodgers: Zach Lee- Here's a team that has spent less on the draft than almost any team in baseball over the last 2-3 years and now reportedly in the midst of a financial crisis due to a messy divorce of the owners and they take the guy who just might be the toughest to sign in the entire draft! He's got a two-sport scholarship to LSU. Nobody is questioning the talent here, but there are whispers that the Dodgers know he won't sign and are punting the pick to next year. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
29. Angels: Cam Bedrosian- Bedrock Jr.! I would not have been unhappy if the Giants had drafted him at #24, so of course, I think this is a great pick and a nice backup to the Cowart pick earlier.
30. Angels: Chevez Clarke- I also would not have been unhappy if the Giants had taken Clarke at #24. Great tools. A bit of concern about whether the hit tool will come.
31. Rays: Justin O'Conner- I'm not wild about O'Conner, but a lot of analysts like his tools and versatility. A nice backup to the earlier Josh Sale steal. The Rays may be looking at him as their catcher of the future.
32. Yankees: Cito Culver- relatively unknown HS player can both hit and pitch. Everybody was looking for the Yanks to take a faller they could pay over slot, maybe Anthony Ranaudo or Stetson Allie? Kind of a curious pick. I wonder if Gerrit Cole's refusal to even let them make an offer last year spooked them away from anyone with a hint of difficulty signing?
That completes the first round. Lots of talent still on the board for the Supplemental First Round.

Scouting the Draft: 11-23 Recap
OK, back to blogging the draft. More big surprises ahead, including the Giants, though it probably shouldn't have been a surprise. More on that later! Here's the breakdown:
11. Blue Jays: Deck McGuire- I think I like Deck a bit more than most analysts. I loved his scouting video. Great pitcher's body. Excellent mix of pitches. I think he has upside in velocity. He's polished enough to have a pretty darn good slide step with runners on base. Nice combination of ceiling and rapid return here for the Jays.
12. Reds: Yasmani Grandal- This one wasn't much of a surprise as this is where a number of mock drafts had Grandal landing if KC passed. The Reds needed a catcher of the future and Grandal provides a nice combination of defense and plate discipline. My comp would be Jason Varitek. Solid pick!
13. White Sox: Chris Sale- almost a given that the White Sox would take a college player. When Sale dropped out of the top 10, heck, make that top 5, he was an obvious choice. I personally think Sale is a bit too skinny, but can't argue with the value of this pick.
14. Brewers: Dylan Covey- The Brewers certainly need pitching. It's just that they need it now. Covey is a nice prospect, but I'm not sure he has any more upside than, say, Asher Wojciechowski who will be ready for the majors much sooner.
15. Rangers: Jake Skole- Jake who? The word on Texas was that they don't have a lot of money to play with what with the change in ownership. They also have multiple high picks. So what do they do in the draft? They take a HS kid with serious helium who has a two sport college scholarship to Georgia Tech. Go figure. I hadn't read Skole's name much, if at all prior to the draft.
16. Cubs: Hayden Simpson- Cubs fans just might be throwing themselves down the stairs on this one. Simpson put up gaudy numbers in college......that's division II college! So obscure, MLB didn't even have a scouting report on him! BA reports a low 90's fastball with good secondary stuff. He was #190-something on their ranking of draft prospects. Gotta be something here that most scouts don't see, or Jim Hendry has gone completely around the bend and basically punted the pick.
17. Rays: Josh Sale- Well there you have it. Tampa Bay isn't drafting in the top 5 and they still get a great pick. It just fell into their laps! He doesn't have a great body for defense, and D is all the rage these days, but the kid can flat out hit. Great pick at this spot for the Rays!
18. Angels: Kaleb Cowart- Gotta think the Angels were aiming for Dylan Covey here. Cowart is a a guy with a ton of talent but some quirky question marks. A two way player, he wants to be a hitter, but most scouts prefer him as a pitcher. He could just decide to go to college where he can do both! The Angels have several high picks, so it's probably worth the gamble to them.
19. Astros: Mike Foltynewics- Folty was never a complete unknown, but he caught serious helium in the weeks leading up to the draft, but was still projected as a late first or supplemental round pick. Nice upside here for the 'Stros.
20. Red Sox: Kobrin Vitek- Vitek was riding the elevator up and down the mock drafts. A lot of people expected the BoSox to take a chance on Anthoney Ranaudo here. They eventually got Ranaudo, but much later. Vitek is a classic "Moneyball" type selection by a classic "Moneyball" GM, except this GM has bucks to play with. Nice, if not great, bat. Doesn't have a real position. In this system, the position will take care of itself as long as he hits.
21. Twins: Alex Wimmers- The Twins like toolsy HS OF's and safe college arms at the top of their drafts. Wimmers certainly fits the second mold. Could be in the majors by this time next year, but probably will never be more than a #3 starter.
22. Texas: Kellin Deglan- another curious pick by Texas whose scouting director apparently didn't get the memo about signability. Deglan is a lefthanded hitting HS catcher out of Canada. His main attraction is he appears to be able to stay behind the plate long term.
23. Florida: Christian Yelich- Kind of a sleeper HS prospect, Yelich has a projectable bat, but may be stuck at 1B with a weak throwing arm. Not sure Florida needs more of that in their organization, and it's not clear that Yelich was the BPA here.
Next up: The Giants!!!

The first 3 picks stuck pretty true to form, but then the surprises started dropping starting with KC taking Christian Colon. So much for him dropping the the Giants!
1. Nationals: Bryce Harper- BPA, #1 overall pick. I'm not as sold on Harper as some. He reportedly has huge personality issues led by an enormous sense of entitlement. Beyond that, I don't like his swing which to me has a big windup that is going to have to go before he is ready to be a MLB hitter. If I was the Nats GM, I'd feel like I had to take him too, but I'd rather not be in that position.
2. Pirates: Jameson Taillon- Flip-flopped with Baltimore on Taillon vs Machado. I think Pittsburgh made the right pick and will be forever glad they had the #2 pick and not #3. Advanced power pitcher who should advance quickly despite coming out of HS.
3. Orioles: Manny Machado- Machado was the consolation prize. Everybody said Baltimore was in an easy position because they would take whichever of Machado or Taillon Pittsburgh didn't take. I bet Baltimore would have gladly traded places with the Buccos.
4. Royals: Christian Colon- The Grandal deal apparently fell apart at the last minute, if there was ever a deal in the first place. Chris Sale appeared to be the backup plan. Christian Colon? Hello! A few serious reporters like Mayo picked this up just today, but talk about throwing the mock drafts into chaos! I think it's a great pick. Colon should stay at SS. He got off to a slow start, but finished the year strong. He should provide both power and speed with a quick development time to a Royals team badly in need of help, fast.
5. Indians: Drew Pomeranz- This one stayed true to form. Everybody likes the lefty, but I'd have taken the RHP with more power, Deck McGuire, but that's just me.
6. D'Backs- Barrett Loux- Big surprise here as everyone assumed they would go with Deck McGuire or Chris Sale. Loux had a fantastic Junior season for Texas A&M. If he's more signable than either Sale or McGuire, I'd have done this too as I think Loux has every bit as much chance of succeeding.
7. Mets- Matt Harvey- A Boras client, but it would make no sense for him to go back to school where his value could only drop. Mets get a pitcher with great upside. May take a bit longer to develop than other college pitchers though.
8. Astros: Delino DeShields- DeShields caught helium late in the draft season. The 'Stros were looking at him for #19 but apparently decided he wouldn't last that long. I personally think this is an overdraft driven by tools and pedigree.
9. Padres: Karsten Whitson- High ceiling HS pitcher. Not a bad choice, but a RH power bat like Michael Choice might have made more sense from an organizational standpoint.
10. A's: Michael Choice- I thought Billy might surprise everybody and go with his current obsession with speed and OF defense by popping Gary Brown here. Obviously Billy still loves him some college power hitters. Nice pick, but very typical Oakland.

9. Padres: Karsten Whitson- High ceiling HS pitcher. Not a bad choice, but a RH power bat like Michael Choice might have made more sense from an organizational standpoint.
10. A's: Michael Choice- I thought Billy might surprise everybody and go with his current obsession with speed and OF defense by popping Gary Brown here. Obviously Billy still loves him some college power hitters. Nice pick, but very typical Oakland.
