The lineup got a boost from newcomer Osleivis Basabe but it was not enough to overcome a less than Quality Start by potential trade target Tyler Mahle and another bullpen failure. Key Lines:
Osleivis Basabe 2B/3B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1), R, 4 RBI. Basabe last played in a MLB game in 2023 with the Rays. Prior to tonight's game he batted .268/.344/.388 with 5 HR and 12 SB in 311 AAA PA's. Hey! It's always a good thing to catch lightning in a bottle. Too bad it wasn't enough to get a win in this game.
The Giants had 4 other batters with 2 hits each. Those 8 hits produced just 2 Runs and 0 RBI's. 12 hits plus 4 BB's should produce more than 5 runs. Lack of power and poor sequencing(random chance?) suppress run production.
Tyler Mahle RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 5.13. Did Mahle hurt his chances of being traded? At first glance yes, but the K/BB and mid-90's velocity may have helped his....or the Giants cause. He also came within one out of getting through 6 innings.
Dylan Smith RHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.89. Smith has been really good but not tonight as the Padres walked him off in the 9'th inning.
Landen Roupp RHP tries to salvage a split of the 4-game series today facing Michael King RHP who comes in with a 3.38 ERA.
The Giants are a hot mess off the field. The Apple TV broadcast on Friday implied, or maybe came right out and said, that Willy Adames SS was less than enthusiastic about working with Ron Washington on his defense prompting a defense from Manager Tony Vitello. Apparently Adames has been playing with a bad back which limits his abilty to play the position in an the exaggerated crouch that Washington favors. IDK. If the back is what caused Adames defense to crater, maybe he should take some time off to try to get it into some semblance of playing shape?
Matt Chapman 3B's return from the IL is delayed due to continued abdominal muscle pain which limits him when trying to run the bases. I suspect this may require surgery in the offseason. Meanwhile, does this open an opportunity for Parks Harber 3B/OF to audition at 3B?
Harrison Bader OF has a 2-year contract but has probably played his last game as a Giant. The Giants took the step of suspending payments on his contract while investigating the circumstances of a scooter injury which it turns out happened at 2 AM outside a bar and Bader crashed into the back of a fire truck.
Harrison, we never knew ye....GOOD RIDDANCE!

ReplyDelete....and he had a SWI (scootering while intoxicated) incident in college that also landed him in the hospital and suspended.
Hopefully they can use him as a cautionary tale for the youngsters. Don't try and be flashy unless and until you hit at least .275 and play for half a season or more.
Based on this year's performance both on and off the field, it would be great if they could get out of paying next year's $11M.

ReplyDeleteThis. His back issues are affecting his performance bigly. Most back issues for young athletes can be managed but require a lot of effort and discipline. He should be required to manage his. He has done nothing in SF to warrant deference at this point.

ReplyDeleteWould have to disagree. Many things are his fault but I already prefer this regime to the last. There's no longer 127 different roster configurations in a single season(which was infuriating and ineffective), much better development in the minor leagues and advancing the right players, and he picked up the best bat we've had in a decade when he got Raphael Devers...and the other trades have been very interesting too.
DeletePlus, BEFORE Posey arrived, this team was unquestionably an Actual "Unmitigated Disaster". I think the team is on the upswing and he may get better over time.

To put it more bluntly, Bader got drunk (though apparently didn’t get lucky) in the Bermuda Triangle late on a Saturday night, got on his e-scooter, braved Lombard at that hour and in that condition, and took on a fire truck. This from a guy who’s body is his business and who solemnly committed to care for it. Fortunately he hurt only himself. It’s a free country and people are free to get blasted, but there are personal consequences. If the Giants can void his contract it would be justified.
ReplyDeleteYes, the season is lost, but more importantly, the team is COMPLETELY lost. In my almost 60 years of following the Giants, I have never seen a more disfunctional organization. And, unfortunately, that covers a LOT of ground. The team was horrible from the mid 70's to the mid 80's but the organization wasn't the hot mess that it is now. Man, they make the Rockies look like a a model franchise! Nice work Johnson family! You stuff your pockets with Fan's $ while ruining what was a proud franchise. If only the value of the team cratered comenserate with the disfunction it is displaying. But unfortunately, the Johnson family can just laugh at the fans all the way to the bank..........

DeleteBuster's fingerprints are all over this roster, so if you don't want to blame the players for under performing, you might blame the guys managing the team.
I think you can fault Greg Johnson for letting Buster Posey steamroll him into the POBO's job with scant qualifications but other than that, what exactly has Johnson done or not done to ruin the franchise?
DeleteI'm not sure they are any worse or better than past administrations. I've been watching them for going on 60 years too and in the last 15-20 the level of scrutiny has gone through the roof. It used to be 3-4 beat writers who had to have two sources and editorial support to print something. We didn't know then what we know now. And not everyone had a camera on them or had the ability to share what they saw with thousands of others who all now have opinions (like us). Are they struggling on the field? They are. Are they struggling off the field? Some are and some aren't. We now know about it at an unprecedented level, for better or for worse. If this team had a bottom half payroll, I'd be tempted to hang more blame on the front office/ownership, but they are top half and just about all the acquisitions were viewed pretty positively by most people when they happened. Bader may be the exception that proved the theory. He;s been with a bunch of teams in a really short time. There must be a reason for that and maybe, now we know part of the answer. Willie, Chappy, and the Deve all seemed like pretty good additions at the time they were signed. Even JHL seemed like a decent add (though it was a somewhat aggressive play for an untried international player) Are they playing up to expectations? No, [except now JHL IS meeting expectations] But it's not because they owners haven't thrown a bunch of money at the players that were available and willing to come here.
