The San Jose Giants bolted out to a great start to the California League Season and finished the first half with the best record in the league at 42-24. They finshed second in the North Division second half at 39-27 and their full season record of 81-51 was the best in the league. They then swept through the postseason against the Fresno Grizzlies and Inland Empire 66'ers to win the Cal League champtionship for the first time since 2021.

The SJ Giant hit and hit for power while their pitchers had the lowest ERA in the league more due to pitchability(command and limiting HR/FB) than big strikeout stuff.

Comments: Three of the SJ Giants top prospects suffered significant muscle strain injures, Jose Ortiz, Carlos Gutierrez and Dakota Jordan. Jean Carlos Sio is a significant sleeper in the system. Dakota Jordan might be the top prospect but he is built like a football linebacker and that body type might not hold up at higher levels. Jhonny Level SS got a late promotion from the ACL and held his own. To my eye, Carlos Gutierrez was the best looking prospect on the team. On the pitching side, Jacob Bresnahan was young for the league and probably has the highest ceiling. Hunter Dryden is a small, wiry righty with some pop in his fastball. Ricardo Estrada, Keyner Martinez and Luis De La Torre got late callups and performed well. Argenis Cayama is thought to have the highest ceiling of the late callups but he struggled in a small sample.
An aside with a comment Giants and former Giants during the Post season:
ReplyDeleteOf all the players involved in 2025 San Francisco's deals with the preseason signings, the early trade for Devers, and the July deadline for trades, it appears that Camilo Doval is the only player still playing baseball in 2025 and likely to get into Wednesday's Yankee game against the Blue Jays for his 3rd appearance in this year's playoffs

Doval did get into the Yankees last game: he was ineffective and got a quick hook.
Giants will see him again in San Francisco When the Yankees Come to Town March 25-28 (2026).
Strange scheduling: 1st game is Wednesday with Thursday AND Sunday off, then a trip to San Diego for 3, back home for 4 with the Mets and then 3 with the Phillies: 10 days in a row after 3 games in 5 days.
Next year is brutal: it ends with 6 games home-and-home with The Hated Ones in the last 10 days. Giants will have 21 games with potential contenders to end the season.
