Kai-Wei Teng pitched 4 innings of shutout ball then faltered and gave up a 4-spot in the 5'th inning. Sonny Gray RHP has a no-hitter and faced just one batter over the minimum for 5 innings then gave up 3 runs in the 6'th inning. That was the ballgame. Key Lines:
Not a key line but a key situation: After the Cardinals scored 4 in the bottom of the 5'th inning, Sonny Gray walked the first two batters he face in the 6'th inning. After Ramos struck out swinging the Giants got a base-hit from Devers, a walk to Adames and base hits from Dom Smith 1B and Matt Chapman 3B. But each of the hits only advanced the runners by one base which brought Jung Hoo Lee CF to the plate with the bases-loaded and one out. He was called out on strikes on a 1-2 count and never swung the bat. That! Can't! Happen! Casey Schmitt lined out to CF. Inning over. The Giants never came close to scoring again.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 7.54. Teng had it going for 4 innings matching goose eggs with the veteran Sonny Gray. It all came apart in the 5'th inning after he walked the bases loaded to start the inning. After a singled drove in one run, Teng was replaced by Jose Butto' RHP who is credited with a shut out inning but allowed 3 inherited runners to score on a single, walk and GIDP.
Joel Peguero RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00. Peguero continues to dazzle with triple-digit heat.
The Giants end the road trip on a down note. They start a homestand tomorrow evening against the D'Backs with Logan Webb RHP facing Nabil Crismatt RHP. What, he's an SP now? He comes in with a 2.14 ERA in 21 IP over 4 appearances and 3 starts.
JHL struck out on 4 pitches. Every single strike was a meat ball and he didn’t swing at one. Inexcusable
ReplyDeleteDoes Peguero have the stuff and the mental forte to be considered an in-house candidate for the closer role?
ReplyDeleteI would say Peguero has closer potential but he's had his ups and downs and you'd like to see him get a longer MLB track record before you hand the job to him.
DeleteCould Peguero be the closer?
ReplyDeleteA complete side note, perhaps of interest, in July, 2024, the Giants traded RHP Alex Cobb to Cleveland Guardians for LHP Jacob Bresnahan and IF/OF Nate Furman .
ReplyDeleteIn the 2024-2025 off season, Cobb and Verlander were signed by Detroit and SF, respectively, for $15,000,000 each.
Cobb has been injured all year and is rehabbing now in the minors, while Verlander has pitched well with little-to-no offensive support in 25 starts with the Giants.
22-year old Bresnanhan has 22 starts for San Jose, is 9-3 with a 2.61 ERA.
24-year old Furman has moved through the Giants lower minors and is looking OK in a SSS with Richmond.
FZ won the trade and Buster won the signing, hands down!
Not only is the AZ series a must for the elusive Playoff slot, it is also the battle for 3rd place in the NL West and an hopeful .500 season.
ReplyDeleteGiants need a sweep for the Playoffs, or, at least win 2 of 3 to stay above .500 and ahead of the D'backs.
Webb and Ray can hopefully hold down AZ's score, but what offense is going to show up?
Are Quality Starts enough? Two or three runs wouldn't have won the last 2 games.
Whatever happens in Games 1 and 2, the series final will be a pitching crapshoot, then comes the Hated Ones for the weekend: the rotation could be Verlander, Webb, & Ray for C̶u̶s̶t̶e̶r̶'s̶ last stand...
i don't know what's going on in the heads of a batter but watching enough games it seems batters are waiting on a certain pitch and if it ain't there, they become statues. it can be maddening. -es
ReplyDeleteThat's OK if it's early in the count but you cannot strike out looking with one out and a runner at 3B even if the bases are loaded.
