Game Wrap 4/13/2022: Giants 2 Padres 1

Antoan Richardson and Mike Schildt met before the game, worked out their differences and came to an understanding.  Gabe Kapler and the Giants remained unapologetic for running up the score in last night's game.  The Giants won a pitcher's duel.

Heliot Ramos RF/LF- 0 for 2, BB.  BA= .333.  Ramos drew a walk in the second inning and scored the Giants first run on Luke Williams 2-run double.  He then got sent down to Sacramento after the game as the Giants do not expect to face many LHP's on the upcoming road trip.  Williams played 3B and made a key play to limit the damage in the first inning by throwing a strike to home plate to nail the runner trying to score on a ground out.  I'm thinking he's probably the Giants best option for the position until Longo is healed and ready to go.

Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 1.29.  Webb got touched for a run in the first inning but settled down to dominate through 8 innings, the longest start of his career.  It was also the longest Giants start of the season so far by a full 3 innings and it was the longest start of the season so far in MLB.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 6.23.  Doval got the Save Opp and turned it into torture loading the bases on a single, walk and HBP before ending it on a K of Matt Beaty.

The Giants hit the road to Cleveland to take on the Guardians starting Friday with Carlos Rodon LHP making his second start of the season facing Zach Plesac RHP.

  1. It will be interesting in Cleveland this weekend: classic hitting v steady pitching?
Cleveland has scored at will in their last 4 games, while SF mostly has scratched for runs other than the blowout Saturday.
Cleveland pitching has mostly been effectively good:
Zach Plesac pitched lights out against KC in his start (v Rodon Friday).
Cal Quantrill gave up 2 runs in 5 innings (v DeSlafani Saturday).
Aaron Civale was not effective in his start that Cleveland won (v Wood Sunday).
2 games to 1 is a win for either side. 1-2 isn't a disaster for SF. Giants need to hold their opponent down and scratch out at least 1 win in the first 2, then take the 3rd game. That would be a very good 1st road series.

Personal note: I doubt many Clevelanders (or readers of this blog) remember the 1954 World Series. That was my personal comeuppance in betting on baseball — even the seemingly obvious.
The Giants were a very good team led by the MVP @ 23 yo Willie Mays with a line of .345/.411/.667/1.078 (he never exceeded that OPS), other note worthies, a very good pitching staff, and the WS secret weapon: Dusty Rhodes (who had a one-off plus plus year). They were opposed by the 111-43 Indians who won the American League handily.
It was, for Cleveland, who had broken through a long stretch of Yankee appearances, a seemingly complete collapse and they wouldn't make it back to the WS for 41 years, only to lose again. And again.
I was sure the Indians would win and bet my lunch money against a personal nemesis every day, only to lose, and again and again.
There's a good article in The Athletic today on baseball betting. It explains why I lost: I didn't do my homework. The Giants were the better team and they had Willie Mays.
