DrB's 2020 Giants Top 50 Prospects List

The end of the Winter Meetings is the traditional start day for DrB's Giants Top 50 Prospect list to be unveiled.  We then write up profiles of each prospect on a daily basis.   There may be more changes before the start of the season since Farhan seems to be interested in taking on more bad contracts for prospects, but there is no indication of when those trades might occur and if we wait too much longer, we run the profiles into Spring Training.  This preliminary list is your opportunity to suggest additional names or moving prospects up or down the list.  I do take reader comments into account and have made changes as result in prior lists.

As always, I advise readers to not get too hung up on the exact order(although we do take the rankings seriously).  The main objective of the exercise is to allow readers to become more familiar with prospects we may be rooting for at Oracle Park in the future.

I try to consider both ceiling and proximity to the majors in my rankings.  This is always challenging because it's the proverbial apples and oranges.  How do you compare a player like Jaylin Davis who is on the 40 man roster and who the Giants clearly want to give a serious chance to this season with, say, Alexander Canario who has shown both tools and performance but is still in the lower minors?

With that preamble, here is the preliminary list, subject to extensive editing before it is finalized in a future post:

  1. No Heath Quinn? Is alright. He's been injured, of late. I also think that Shaw will finally get a good look this season. This is his make or break season. Better torch spring training and not stop all year.

  2. Not to be in any way argumentative -- it's a great list -- but:
#11 Dany Jimenez is either on the 26-man roster (all year) or gone -- in either event he is not really a "prospect."
If Belt is mercifully traded (mercy for him), Shaw is up. Otherwise he's not. Somewhat like Jimenez, he's either/or.
    That's for proximity, not ceiling...

  3. All those pitchers, 18 in the Top 50 after Webb and Cory, have such a great opportunity: there's nothing but open pasture above them, qhwn Shark and Cueto are gone. There are about 5 other pitchers above them to fill a staff of 14: they only have to perform!
The future for position players looks strong, but the future pitching is near a void: wide open!

  4. Ricardo Genoves? If I had such a list, I'd probably put Seth Corry a little higher, maybe up to 4 or 5... best pitcher in the SAL and a lefty.. value to the org is likely super high. Anyway, thanks for the blog.

    1. Avelino is another name I don't see. He had a pretty good season in AAA, so I'd at least consider him an HM.

  5. JJ Santa Cruz. On your list last year and did nothing but impress us this season. His #s are great and even was relief pitcher of the month in the Greenjakets org.. A fan favorite. Again, love the list every year.
