Down on the Farm: 7/25/2016

AAA  Sacramento River Cats pounded the Reno Aces 12-4:

Ehire Adrianza 3B- 2 for 6.  BA= .429.
Joe Panik 2B- 0 for 3.  BA= .111.
Hunter Pence, RF- 3 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .500.
Kelby Tomlinson SS- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .288.
Adalberto Mejia LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.20.
Matt Reynolds LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

An all Giants rehab lineup here.  Pence looks like he's ready. What's his timetable?  Giants need a lefty reliever?  Reynolds has MLB experience.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels soared over the Akron Rubber Ducks 10-4:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .312.
Christian Arroyo 3B- 3 for 5, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .285.
CJ Hinojosa SS- 3 for 6, 3B.  BA= .282.
Ryder Jones 1B-3B- 3 for 5.  BA= .240.
Hunter Cole RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .274.
Steven Lerud C- 3 for 5.  BA= .221.
Matt Gage LHP- 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.84.
Carlos Alvarado RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.82.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants cooled off the Bakersfield Blaze 2-1:

Ronnie Jebavy CF- 0 for 1, 3 BB, SB(20).  BA= .263.
Dylan Davis RF- 2 for 2, 2B, HR(9), 2 BB.  BA= .276.
Cristian Paulino 2B- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .267.
Jason Forjet RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.57.

Forjet has games like this that make you think he could be a #4 or 5 MLB starter, but he has not been able to find consistency this year.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Greensboro Grasshoppers 3-1:

Matt Winn C- 1 for 3, HR(8), BB.  BA= .223.
Johneshwy Fargas CF- 3 for 4.  BA= .287.
Cory Taylor RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 9/0.  ERA= 2.40.
Ryan Halstead RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.59.
Ryan Koziol RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 1.99.

I see 3 unexpected breakout SP's for the Giants this year, Slania, Connolly and Taylor.  Last year it was the Johnsons and Coonrod.  The Johnson's have disappointed this year, but Coonrod has kept it going.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Eugene Emeralds 5-1:

Manuel Geraldo 3B- 3 for 5, 3B.  BA= .273.
Bryan Reynolds CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .296.
Gio Brusa LF- 2 for 5, 2B.   BA= .319.
Mac Marshall LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.67.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Geraldo is hitting .333 over his last 10 games.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  D'Backs outscored the Giants 8-3:

Mikey Edie CF- 1 for 5, 3B.  BA= .190.
Brandon Van Horn SS- 1 for 3, 3B, SF.  BA= .198.
Robinson Medrano 1B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .196.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants defeated the Rojos 6-2(game called due to rain after the top of the 9'th inning):

Ismael Munguia CF- 2 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .301.
Jose Rivero SS- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .253.
Angeddy Almanzar 1B- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .313.
Manuel Figueroa RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.95.
Eduin Villa RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.84.

Munguia is looking like the real deal and Almanzar seems to have some serious power potential.

  1. Looks like Kelby is getting his swing back. I think it takes him some ABs to get his timing down. When he was coming off the bench for 1 ph appearance every few days he was struggling for the Giants, but once he started getting starts and regular playing time his average shot up

    1. He is on fire! Time to call him back up and plant him at 3rd and make Duffy earn his position back.

  2. Arroyo took a nasty one off the hand yesterday. He's not in the lineup today. Said to be day-to-day. Seems to be a really tough kid though. He's taken a beating this year at different times, but just keeps coming back. Gotta love it!

According to a MLB article, the Gs will have to activate Adrianza or designate him for assignment by next week. What's your most likely scenario Doc?

When I saw your stats on Tomlinson from last night I had to go back and check the box score (Sorry to doubt you). That's quite a night seeing how he seemed to be struggling recently. Then I went back and checked his stats page, and found he's quietly worked his way up to a .288 average (.432 over his last ten games). He's hit safely in his last six games, and in four of those he had multiple hits. Do you think he rejoins the big club at any point this season?

Gotta "feel" for Pena. Yikes! That one he took in the jewels last night WILL Pain Ya!

They're saying Panic could rejoin the team as early as this weekend in DC. Do you really think it will be that early? Doesn't seem like he's had enough time to reset at the plate.

  3. BTW, Susac and Ishikawa started for the River Cats l/u last night, too, making 6 "Giants" in the starting l/u.

Arroyo and Hinojosa are quite a pair.

  4. We are incredibly fortunate to still be in 1st with the AAA squad. Peña wasn't even on my radar, especially with Rando doing so well. Grant Green spent plenty time with A's so you know he could do it. But Ehire, this was really supposed to be his year and he was locked in before injury.

We need the big dawgs to return to get that trophy back. Adrianza is part of that. Kelby Tomlinson is a better version of Green, aside from Green having more power. Peña goes down, toss up on Green.

  5. We are carrying Gillespie, Green and Pena. Pena can play 2b and 3b (as can Tomlinson). So presumably one of Gillespie and Green go down. Green was last man in and he can't play first base, so I think he's first out. I think Gillespie is second man down, regardless of whether it is Kelby or Duffy who comes back next. I think the real issue is whether we keep two back ups when Duffy (who I'm expecting after Kelby) comes back.

I can see us keeping both, and then sending Parker down. With Williamson taking over and Blanco having more than enough in reserve to give guys a rest, I see us not needing Parker as much. Plus, Tomlinson did do a little time in OF (and could always do more if it increases his versatility). The real issue is what happens when Pence and Duffy are both back, and that might be the time we have to pick between Kelby and Pena. We could shorten the pen for a bit, but given how bad it has been, I tend to doubt it.
