Game Wrap 7/17/2016: Padres 5 Giants 3

Johnny Cueto had a subpar start and Edwin Jackson(yes, THAT Edwin Jackson!) was up to his old tricks of effective wildness as the Giants completed a faceplant out of the All-Star Break getting swept in San Diego.  Key Lines:

Conor Gillaspie- 1 for 2, HR(3).  BA= .260.  Gillaspie's 3 run PH dinger was one of just 2 hits the Giants mustered against Jackson who walked 5 batters.

Johnny Cueto- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.63.  He only pitched 2 innings in the ASG, and he did not have to travel anywhere afterward, but Cueto appeared to be fatigued.  His side was apparently hurting before the game to the point where Jake Peavy thought he might end up starting instead of Cueto and got taped up early.  Cueto and Samardzija both had rough second halves last year, so we'll have to hope the Giants pitcher whisperers figure something out.  And if Cueto is fatigued and hurting, they might consider putting him on the DL as a preventative measure.  I think a 2 week DL stint should be built into almost every pitcher's schedule at some point in the season.

Edwin Jackson- 6.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.76.  Yup, it's THAT Edwin Jackson! I had a bad feeling about this game as soon as I saw his name as the scheduled starter.

Silver lining:  The D'Backs held off a Dodgers comeback for a 6-5 win so the Giants maintain their 5.5 game lead over the bad guys in the NL West.

The Giants get tomorrow off to travel to Boston for an interleague series against the BoSox in Fenway Park with Jake Peavy facing Rick Porcello in the opener on Tuesday, 7/19/2016.

  1. cueto is sick. flu symptoms. was sick before the as game. probably should not have pitched. sick before this game, bad enough that the night before he was on an iv. so according to the giants, there isnt anything physically wrong with him beyond that, but you have to think that all the innings he threw in the first half is going to take a toll. which is why they have to think really hard about the pen
and i dont want to sound like a broken record, but the league has to do something about the k-zone...and a lot more than having joe torre yell at managers to stop moaning about it. it is beyond ridiculous
