Down on the Farm: 8/28/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats vs Iowa Cubs postponed due to rain.  DH today.

*********************************************************************************

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Akron Rubber Ducks 5-3:

Rando Moreno(SS)- 2 for 5.  BA= .280.
Myles Schroder(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .243.
Hunter Cole(DH)- 2 for 5.  BA= .298.
Jesus Galindo(RF)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .230.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.23.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(9).  ERA= 5.40.

I'm going to say the grind of his first full pro season finally got to Beede.  I'll be looking for some great starts next spring.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants blanked the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 5-0:

Daniel Carbonell(LF)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .262.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .265.
Brian Ragira(DH)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .260.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Ray Black(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.13.

Very nice way to end the season for Martin Agosta.  He finished with a 2.87 ERA over his last 10 starts.  His peripheral numbers were strong all season with 116 K's against just 24 BB in 100 IP.  His most glaring problem is the 15 dingers he allowed.  I'm calling a breakout season next year in AA.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  West Virginia Power beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1:

Jonah Arenado(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .265.
DJ Snelton(LHP)- 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Rodolfo Martinez(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.76.

Huge strides for Martinez this year.  He will definitely be in my Giants Top 50 Prospects next season and maybe in the top half of that list.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-0:

Miguel Gomez(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .328.
Luis Pino(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.38.
EJ Encinosa(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.71.

Gomez is another guy with serious helium in the Giants prospect rankings.  Not sure where he plays but gotta find a place for that bat!

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Dodgers smothered the Giants 2-0:

Mikey Edie(CF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .290.
Nick Gonzalez(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.57.
Jose Morel(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.91.

Edie has had the best season of all the young 5 tool studs not named Johneshwy.  Again, I have no idea what Nick Gonzalez is doing in the AZL.  Morel should get an opportunity at a higher level next year.

DSL  Giants edged out the Yankees1 3-2 in an 8-inning rain shortened game:

Sandro Fabian(RF, 17 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR.
Beicker Mendoza(LF, 17 yo)- 1 for 3, HR.
Victor Concepcion(RHP, 18 yo)- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's.

Man!  The rubber game of a 3 game playoff series ends up being rain-shortened!  I would not feel good about that if the Giants had lost.  Oh well, any team named Yankees1 deserves that kind of fate!  Great to see the 17 year olds step up with the season on the line.  I expect to see Concepcion in the States next year.  Giants start the final DSL playoff series against the Rangers today.

  1. Edie is only 17 so there is a decent chance he could develop some power. However, Fargas is 20 and there is no power to speak of. Should we still consider Fargas a 5 tool player? Just playing devil's advocate.

I think Miguel Gomez could be a prototypical power corner. I believe he could be a 15-20HR guy. I am expecting a big year for him next year. He probably will replace Arenado in Augusta and Arenado to San Jose.

    1. I think Fargas has room and time to fill out and has power potential

    2. Have we heard anything about Gomez's ability behind the plate? He's started 14 games there in SK, so clearly that haven't given up on that idea yet. That said, even if he could catch, I wonder if they'd move him away from it just to accelerate his movement through the system by taking away the burden of learning/playing catcher.

    3. I would love to see the Giants develop a utility guy who could serve as a 3'rd catcher to give more flexibility to the bench. When you have just 2 catchers, and can't use the bench guy as a PH because you need to protect against an in-game injury to the starter, it really puts a crimp in it. A second reserve catcher who could play at least 1 other position would probably make it possible to get by with 4 positional bench players which the Giants have been doing anyway for much of the season.

  2. Crazy to think a playoff game could be rain shortened, eh? Well, glad our DSL's had the lead! Go get 'em DSL Giants. Hope the playoff experience helps our young guys thrive.

I'm so glad you mention Miguel Gomez. He has been on fire. Last year's DSL League MVP. Had a 22-game hitting streak this season. In fact, IIRC, for about THREE weeks he was batting about .420. Dang. Yeah, had at least one hit in 30 of 31 games. He really seems like a pro. Reports say he puts in the work. He's consistent. Splits look very good. Oh, and I dream about guys with versatility = depth.

Imagine one day we've got a switch-hitting (back-up?) catcher who could play 3B or 1B as well? We've got three of four MI who can all cover SS in a pinch. Maybe Tomlinson becomes a super-UT, even playing some CF? For an NL team, that could be hugely valuable. I dare say we could afford our 5th bench guy to be a big bat that only gets 150-220 PA's/season. I hope Gomez keeps on keeping on, and also continues to develop/improve. Yeah, IMO, he could be one of the most interesting Giants prospects to follow next season. Definitely. Cheers.

  3. Doc, just what is known about Rodolfo Martinez? His numbers look nice but not eye-popping, yet BA said Sally League managers voted him best relief pitcher and you comment above about his development. What the deal with this guy?

    1. Here's the deal with Martinez: He has a 97-100 MPH FB. His big goal this season was to get the walk rate under control which he accomplished nicely.

  4. I know Kelby doesn't have a long history of success, but if he has figured it out, what about moving him to Centerfield? He stole 46 bases in one season in the minors and he is clutch. We don't have a lot of talent in the minors in the outfield. Maybe he becomes what we hoped Gary Brown would be?

    1. I believe there is already talk of expanding Tomlinson's defensive repertoire to include the OF. I see it more of a way to expand his value as a utility player than to make him a full time OF.

Remember the Giants already have at least 4 OF's essentially under contract for next season: Aoki, Pagan, Pence and Blanco.

    2. I like the outside the box thinking. However, with Kelby only playing 1 career game in the OF, that might seem like a huge task. Especially CF which is the hardest of the OF positions. They definitely have a big decision to make with his success. Do they let him rot on the bench when Panik gets back? Do they package him up in a deal this winter when his value is fairly high? Do they train him to play another position? I am sure we will find out the answer to these questions by the end of spring training.
