Game Wrap 9/10/2014: Giants 5 D'Backs 0

The Giants put together a 4 run rally in the 7'th inning to break open a scoreless pitching duel between Ryan Vogelsong and Josh Collmenter.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .305.

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(15).  BA= .264  Another problem I have with WAR.  Blanco has been a major contributor to the last 2 Giants wins, yet his fWAR score remains at 1.9.   Seems to me that he must have made at least a 0.1 or 0.2 Win Share over the last 2 games.  Maybe Fangraphs does not update their WAR on a daily basis?  Blanco's double to drive in the go-ahead run came after an initial show of bunt.  Now I don't remember if he failed or if it was a Ball.

Matt Duffy- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .217.  Duffy went up initially to sacrifice 2 runners over, but the first two pitches were Balls and Bochy took the sign off.  Duffy lined a hanging breaking ball into the RF corner to drive in 1 run.  Crawford then scored on a WP or PB with Duffy advancing to 3B and then score on a SF by Pagan.  Duffy now has 2 hits in 2 games a previous 0 for 11 skid. He is also 2 for 6 as a PH.  Matt Duffy!

Ryan Vogelsong- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 3.90.  The walks were a bit worrisome, especially early on as he threw 42 pitches in the first 2 innings including 30 in the second.  Vogey hung tough, though, and did not give an inch and left all those runners stranded.

The Win allowed the Giants to keep pace with the Dodgers who blanked the Padres behind Dan Haren 4-0.  The Giants trail the NL West leaders by 2.5 games.  All the Wild Card contenders won so the Giants remain 4 games ahead of the Pirates for the home field advantage in the play-in game and lead the Brewers and Braves by 5.5 games.

Jake Peavy tries to close out a series sweep this afternoon facing Randall Delgado who has come out of the bullpen with an improved slider added to his pitch repertoire.

  1. Going to be interesting what the Giants do with Vogey in the offseason. He seems like a guy they are going to want to go year to year with and with a little bit of a bounce back year for him, he might be looking for and getting a 2 year deal from someone. Not sure the Giants will go there and he seemed a little bitter the way the Giants handled his last deal so he may want to test the waters. He is a grinder though.

    1. Maybe one year with the promise of a job with the organization and/or production-based option for a second year.

    2. I think they're better off going with Peavy over Vogelsong. Peavy is younger and can probably give us the same or better performance than Vogelsong. So, the rotation could be MadBum, Cain, Hudson, Peavy, Petit. Although, it would be awesome if somehow the Giants got someone like Lester, but there's practically no way that happens.

    3. petit has yet to show he can go an entire year

i think that vogey has another year in him and if any of the kids are ready come midseason, he can transition to the pen

    4. I think we need to bring back them all back to give us insurance in case Cain can't go.

  2. You're looking for WPA. That calculates how much a player actually affects any given game based on the real life scenario. WAR is more theoretical based on overall performance.

    1. If you follow Fangraphs, WAR scores do sometimes change after a big performance in a game and go down after an 0 for 5 or a game in which a player commits 2 or 3 errors.

  3. Blanco took what looked like ball 2 but it was called for a strike. He didn't like it enough to have a chat. Then he had to foul off another ball out there, then he pulled the ball into the corner. He is looking like he did in September-October 2012 to me, and he took care of several line drives that would have befuddled Morse yesterday. While he's not a full time player, he's a very useful one when utilized correctly.

Matt Duffy! It is so rewarding to watch these kids contribute to a playoff drive. Its what its all about, and its joyful and fun. Joe Panik missed a splash hit by inches last night. He also made a couple very nice plays in the field, while ultimately going 0 for 5 after his 5 for 5.
