Down on the Farm: 7/4/2014

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers outslugged the Fresno Grizzlies 11-7:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .269.
Ehire Adrianza(2B)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .286.
Andrew Susac(Catcher)- 4 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.
Chris Dominguez(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(11).  BA= .282.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 4.2 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.31.

A disappointing start for Escobar.

AA  Game 1  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Reading Fightin' Phils 1-0:

Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 14/2.  ERA= 3.78.

I think Marte could eventually be just as good as Eric Stults.

AA  Game 2  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Reading Fightin' Phils 2-0:

Devin Harris(RF)- 2 for 3, HR(7).  BA= .279.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 9/0.  ERA= 3.04.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 3.68.

Nice return from the DL and rehab assignment by Blackburn.

High A  Stockton Ports pounded the San Jose Giants 17-6:

Blake Miller(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .314.
Alberto Robles(SS)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .224.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.31.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 305.

Robles is hitting .294 over his last 10 games after hitting .262 in the month of June.  Were there any special field conditions in this one?  Wind blowing R-L at 14 MPH?  If not, this is a very disappointing start for Stratton.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Greenville Drive 13-9:

Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .276.
Tyler Horan(RF)- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(10), BB.  BA= .272.
Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .226.
Luis Ysla(LHP)-  4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.47.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Hillsboro Hops 5-1:

Will Callaway(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .301.
Jose Reyes(RHP)- 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.82.

Rookie AZL  D'Backs defeated the Giants 9-7 in 11 innings:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B, Sac, SB(11).  BA= .429.
Rodney Price(DH)- 4 for 6.  BA= .391.
Kevin Rivera(2B)- 1 for 4, BB, SF.  BA= .208.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Sam Coonrod(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA- 0.00.

DSL  Rojos(Reds) edged the Giants 3-2 in 10 innings:

Carlos Valdez(LF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .292.
Alilzon Rodriguez(Catcher)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.
Jose Morel(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.77.

Rodriguez is 17 yo. Hasn't played much so far.  Morel is 20 yo.  He put up strong numbers last year out of the bullpen as a 19 year old.  Gotta think there is some reason the Giants don't see him as a prospect.

  1. When the parent club doen not fare well, I tend to be more negative, and so I first see the disappointing numbers from Martin Agosta, Stratton, Ysla and Escobar.

Then I look further, and it was a good night (or day) for Raphael, Susac, Blackburn and Susac.

  2. Not that the Giants would do it but they have no where near the package to trade that the A's did. If that is what it takes to get frontline talaent, Giants could be in trouble come tradedeadline if they are trying to get true impact players.

    1. Samardzija was probably THE elite talent on the market. Price is up there too, but there are other players who could help a lot who would not cost that much, Daniel Murphy, one of several closers for starters.

    2. Also, you have to remember that Billy just paid an unusually high price here.

    3. I wonder if the Cubs would be willing to part with Arrieta. He's having a solid year, and would be a nice addition.
