Down on the Farm: 7/20/2014

AAA  Fresno blanked the El Paso Chihuahuas 6-0:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 3 for 4, SB(4).  BA= .244.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 3, HR(12), BB.  BA= .261.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 11/3.  ERA= 3.78.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Harrisburg Senators 5-4 in 15 innings:

Kelby Tomlinson(2B)- 5 for 7, 2B, 3B, BB, SB(41).  BA= .277.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 6, 2B, BB.  BA= .344.
Jarrett Parker(CF)- 2 for 6, BB.  BA= .260.
Eleizer Zambrano(Catcher)- 3 for 7.  BA= .271.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.95.

Huge game for Kelby Tomlinson!  He was already having a very interesting season and it just keeps building.  And he and Matt Duffy are forming quite the Keystone Combination, aren't they?  Tomlinson's K and BB rates are solid at 15% and 10% respectively.  While he won't stay this hot forever, the season long numbers look sustainable.  I guess the one thing to pick on is his almost total lack of power, something Matt Duffy seems to have just enough of.

High A  San Jose Giants pounded the Lake Elsinore Storm 8-2:

Elliott Blair(RF-LF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .313.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .271.
Brian Ragira(DH)- 1 for 3, HR(11), HBP.  BA= .243.
Brandon Bednar(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .300.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 9/3.  ERA= 3.09.

Ragira hit .304 in June and is hitting .282 in July, but just .214 over his last 10 games.  5 of his 11 HR's have come in July for a .513 SLG%.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets swarmed the Charleston River Dogs 14-3:

Ryder Jones(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB, HBP, SB(6).  BA= .219.
Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 6.  BA= .247.
Tyler Horan(CF)- 2 for 5, HR(13), BB, SB(8).  BA= .268.
Jeremy Sy(DH)- 2 for 4, HR(9), 2 BB.  BA= .246.
Ryan Jones(2B)- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .241.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 13.50.

Interesting that Horan played CF.  Doubt that is a permanent move.  Vander Tuig's return to Augusta was limited to 1 inning by a rain delay.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 6-1:

Seth Harrison(LF)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .267.
Fernando Pujadas(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .262.
Jose Reyes(RHP)- 8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/3.  ERA= 3.44.

I believe this is Reyes best start as a pro.

Rookie AZL  D'Backs defeated the Giants 5-2:

Matthew Gage(LHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.69.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.66.

DSL  Giants were idle as usual on Sundays.

  1. Wow, Giants sign Dan Uggla. I disagree with those who say he's no better than Hicks. You never know, he could get re-energized in a new location with a team that obviously thinks he might have something left. We only need him to perform for a few months. There have been worse players to take a flyer on.

    1. He might be 'done' as DrB says.

But, it seems to me that this is Sabean's M.O.

    2. Ugh! That's all I have to say. Uggla is the kind of guy who might hit 3 HR's in his first 4 games, then the next thing you know he's gone 0 for his last 40 and has lost a bunch of games for you with his terrible fielding. He's done, I tell you. Done!

    3. DrB, I feel you. I really do. However, his contract with the Braves is done although they owe him 18MM. He is now playing for his next contract. I like his chances of him going to Fresno and see what he can do and maybe someone in the Giant's organization will work with him and fix what has been going wrong the last 2-3 years. Maybe the Braves organization has their head up their ass and cannot see glaring issues with his swing. His fielding is terrible. I do not disagree there. I also believe he probably won't even make it out of Fresno. But there is that 1/10 of 1% chance we can get lightning in the bottle like Huff and Burrell. I think the pro rated minimum is worth to take a look.

    4. Totally agree Alan ..Zero risk....So he takes some ABS away Brandon Hicks down in Fresno as the Giants search for a miracle at 2B........Maybe Panik and Scuts can get it done..but that's a huge question mark.....Maybe Uggla can find his lost mojo..Doubtful, but you never know...And they can still be looking at Duffy for help also...Heck, I'd even give FREDY SANCHEZ or ROBBIE THOMPSON a call to see what they are doing!!!!

The problem is, IMO, they can't spend any assets on 2B because the need at OF is much more dire (Pagan's back plus maybe Morse moving to 1B for Belt) and possibly ditto for a 5th starter and a dependable reliever (the way Romo is performing)....

    5. There are just so many Giants fans who have been pining for Dan Uggla for so long that I can't help but feel that there is a whole lot of living in the past going on here. The Giants have the resources to get not only a true difference maker at 2B, but a CF and a reliever or two as well. Heck throw in another starter into the mix with Cain on the shelf. They need to be making moves on Zobrist, Murphy, Asdrubal Cabrera or Aviles, not wasting their time and efforts on Dan Uggla, who even in the best case scenario is going to lose as many games for them on D as he wins on O.

We'll see what happens. If Uggla is the only move at 2B, then Sabes is essentially throwing in the towel on the season.

    6. DrB, I do like the names (minus Mike Aviles. He couldn't take a walk if his life depended on it) you listed but the prices will probably be too high. Each of those teams will want an arm and a leg for them. I don't think Sabean is throwing in the towel. Sometimes it is better to stay put unless you see an obvious upgrade. Granted the Giants 2B have overall hit .180 for the year but I just don't see any of them making a huge impact to give up say Crick, Susac, etc. I really liked how you brought up Steve Cishek a while back. He would be a good guy to go all in for. Other than that I would like to see them wait to the waiver period and maybe we can take on a contract giving up very or little prospects. I would not be pissed if we acquired Murphy or Zobrist but I am not going out and buying there jersey anytime soon. I really like Panik and think with a bigger sample size he could be as good as anyone rumored for 2B.

  2. Depth chart:

    Catcher: Posey, Sanchez, Susac.
    Shortstop: Crawford, Adrianza, Duffy
    2B: Scutaro, Panik, Tomlinson.

The last time we had depth at 3B, we traded Gilaspie for Soptic. I know many so called 'experts' have always under-rated our prospects, but it seems we could have done better (at least so far) than that. Perhaps it might still turn out in our favor in the long run????

  3. What no one seems to be mentioning is Duffy's 19 or 20 errors. That's not too impressive. That's compared to Tomlinson's 6 or so. I've followed Tomlinson since his Junior year at TT where he won a Gold Glove. The kid can field the ball. His speed speaks for itself. Not sure why the move from SS to 2nd unless it's a grooming for both positions. I'm convinced he has a future.

    1. 19 or 20? Duffy has 15, in 85 games played this year all at short. Tomlinson has 41/49 SBs. Duffy is 20/23. Tomlinson has 7 errors playing 89 games, 70 at 2B.

    2. Just for comparison, Brandon Crawford has made 13 errors in 92 games, 89 starts at SS this year. Yeah, 15 errors in 85 games is not terrible for a SS.

    3. Having said that, I have also been under the impression that Tomlinson is the better fielding SS, so I was surprised that he moved to 2B where Duffy's bat seems to be good enough. I would be curious to know the thinking that went into those assignments.

  4. My bad on the # of Es for Duffy. DrB, IMHO, you're right, Tomlinson is the better fielding SS, and I too am curious as to the reasoning behind the position switch. I guess time will tell.

I was somewhat curious how the line up would look for the first game in Akron with Graham rejoining the team there. I was curious to see if they would keep KT at lead off or put Graham back in that spot. Twitter indicates that KT will remain at lead off with Graham batting in the 2 hole.

If RVA can get Duffy, Graham, and KT hot at the same time, they have a real chance at winning the EL. Which brings up another question. Which do you feel a player would rather do at this point in the season. Move up to AAA or stay in RVA with a legit chance to win a ring?

    1. My guess is it depends completely on the player. Of course, they're all working toward one common goal, but you know these guys get attached to each other as seasons progress. I really don't think Duffy is going anywhere this year, although he's clearly earned a promotion.
