Game Wrap 5/6/2014: Pirates 2 Giants 1

This game was a polar opposite of last night's with the added drama of a tight pitching duel coming to an end on a call at home plate that was overturned by replay on appeal.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt- 2 for 2, BB, HBP, SB(3).  BA= .253.   Maybe Belt is starting to come around a bit?  That's what?  4 hits in his last 3 games?

Ehire Adrianza- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .200.   Adrianza drove in the Giants only run with a SF, but also committed the error that led to an unearned run which was the difference in the game.

Tim Hudson- 8.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.  ERA= 1.99.  Heartbreaking way to lose a game.  Huddy had two jobs tonight:  1.  Win the game.  2.  Spare the bullpen.  He pitched well enough to accomplish #1 and did accomplish #2.  The winning run scored in the bottom of the 9'th inning as Starling Marte hit a high drive off the RF wall that bounced back past Hunter Pence.  Marte had an easy triple but the throw got past Sandoval and Marte headed for home.  The throw arrived a bit ahead of Marte and it looked like he slid headfirst into Posey's tag.  The ump called him out and it looked like the game was headed into extra innings.  The Bucs appealed the play.    IMO, the replay clearly showed Marte's hand touching home plate before the tag was applied to his chest.   Hate to lose the game like that, but the replay call was right.

The Loss dropped the Giants record to 21-12.  The rest of the NL West teams all won their games which leaves the Rockies 1 game back, the Dodgers 2.5, the Padres 6 and the D'Backs 10.5.

Tim Lincecum faces Gerrit Cole in the rubber game of the series tomorrow in a early game so the Giants can get away to LA where they will face the Dodgers for 4 games over the weekend.

  1. This evening's game was the 'other side of the coin' to last evenings game. Yesterday, a couple of little things broke our way, and we won. Today, the final 'break' went the other way.
    It's baseball, Jake.

    1. Indeed. Pirates can't possibly be as bad as record indicates. It's been a tough place for SFG to win games. Huddy saved pen not only for today, but for the Dodgers series. His effort yesterday may help them win a game or two over the next 5.
