Game Wrap 5/16/2014: Marlins 7 Giants 5

The Giants finally got outhit by the Marlins in a hard fought game that saw the Giants once again come back from a 4-1 deficit, but the Marlins bullpen was better this time.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .329.  Typical Pagan game, which is really good.  He went a long way to catch a drive against the left-centerfield wall late in the game.  He initially took the wrong route, but was able to adjust in time.

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  Sandoval hit the ball with the most authority we've seen from him for a long time going to LF and left-center from the left side of the plate.

Michael Morse- 2 for 4.  BA= .277.  Morse continues to show he is not just a HR hitter.

Yusmeiro Petit- 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's, 2 HR's.   ERA= 5.23.  Petit has always had pretty good peripheral numbers, but dingers have always been his downfall.  No exception tonight.  He's got good stuff, but he has to always put it in the right place and he doesn't always do that.  The ump was a problem for him tonight, IMO.

Mark Ripperger- That was one of the worst ball-strike umpiring I've seen in awhile!  Definitely the worst this season.  It wasn't that he was squeezing or expanding the zone.  It's that it was completely inconsistent!  Both pitchers had to deal with the same inconsistency, but Alvarez used a 96 MPH sinker to pitch to contact whereas Petit has to work on the edges of the zone, so the situation favored Alvarez' style. It was also a very low zone, which also favored Alvarez.

The loss dropped the Giants lead in the NL West to 3 games over the Rockies who defeated the Padres 3-1 with Jorge De La Rosa taking a no-no deep into the game.  The Dodgers crushed the D'Backs 7-0 behind Zach Greinke and are now 4 games back in 3'rd place.  The Padres and D'Backs remain 7 and 11.5 games back respectively.

Tim Lincecum tries to get the Giants back on the winning track today facing RHP Tom Koehler.

  1. The Marlins played played a better game overall and deserved the win. It must be tough for any spot starter like Petit to stay sharp locating his pitches. Surprised that Crawford didn't handle a couple of grounders. Casilla was frustrated with the ump too. The Miami GM should be commended for the young arms they have. They will give teams fits this season.

    1. The Marlins were ridiculed and scorned for unloading a bunch of overpaid underachievers a couple of years ago. They are a much better team for it now.

    3. I do not dispute the Loria is a con artist and a crook, but I am quite sure he is not alone in those characteristics as a MLB owner. The firesale was held up as proof of his con artistry and crookedness when in fact, the firesale needed to happen and was good for the health of the team.
