Down on the Farm: 5/26/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies outhit the Salt Lake City Bees 10-6:

Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .318.
Mark Minicozzi(1B)- 4 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .571.
Travis Ishikawa(DH)- 2 for 3, HR(2), BB, HBP.  BA= .375.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .285.
Mason Tobin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.77.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.84.

AA  Trenton Thunder outscored the Richmond Flying Squirrels 13-9:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 3 for 5, SB(21).  BA= .319.
Ryan Lollis(LF)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .247.
Mario Lisson(3B)- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .271.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB, SB(3).  BA= .244.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA=  4.08.

Parker's dinger was a grand slam.  Not sure what to make of Crick's numbers here as the entire Richmond bullpen including Cody Hall and Derek Law got torched even worse.  Maybe the ball was just carrying well in a day game?

High A  Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 10-2:

Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.34.

Speaking of TJ and hard throwers….Strickland continues to dominate.  I would think he should be called up to at least AA any day.

Low A  Savannah Sand Gnats blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 2-0 in a game called in the top of the 8'th inning:

Luis Ysla(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.36.

  1. Sorry, but who is TJ?

    1. Hunter Strickland underwent Tommy John surgery early last season. The Giants reportedly saw him as a prime candidate for rapid promotion, possibly even to the majors before the injury.

    2. Not only that, but one of the beat reporters noted that the Giants think he could be a future closer for us, they are that high on Strickland!

    3. I think he's leap fogged Hembree in the eyes of the FO. That is insane for someone who probably started off as one of those claims that was one scout pounding sand saying he knew the key to unlocking Hunters potential! Bet it's the same guy who pimped Corrdier, they're both ex Pirates after all.

Back to Hunter, guy sounds nasty. SJ beat writer has him 96-98 with a plus slider AND he knows where they're both going. To miss a year with TJ and pick up EXACTLY where you left off is pretty amazing.

I know a lot of us where speculating that Hembrees lack of velo in the show was him trying to reign it in a bit, but maybe not. Those flashy radar gun readings seamed to vanish after he got off the DL with a strained flexor tendon (one of the many TJ precursors) during that first Fresno stint. Obviously he held his own last year, but he hasn't made that leap. Now he's let guys like Law and Strickland creep right up on him, with a fire balling Okert not far behind.

Totally random but fun fact about Runzler, he and his agent thought he was a MiLB FA after last season. Something about his rehab time in the minors not counting towards his MiLB service clock prevented it. He left last year thinking he was going to find an opportunity with a cellar dwellar at the ML level and show case that heat a bit. Instead he's back in Fresno. Regardless, if he keeps it up he's going to get a cup in Sept at the minimum.

  2. Runzler is looking good too. Possible trade bait? Lot's of clubs could use a lefty in their pen right now.

    1. We could use Runzler in case Gutierrez or Huff falters.

    2. As great as they have been Affeldt and Lopez are getting on the old side now, and Affeldt has been injury prone his whole Giants career. I assume Runzler is going to be kept around as backup in case any big injury hits either of them, and if he continues doing well, get 40-manned after the season or even in September so he can get a call up.

Plus, as noted by BLSL, if either falters, particularly Huff who is also a lefty.
