Down on the Farm: 5/23/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Salt Lake City Bees 7-3:

Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .308.
Juan Perez(RF)- 3 for 5, SB(4).  BA= .389.
Andrew Susac(Catcher)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .277.
Darren Ford(CF)- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .288.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.05.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.89.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.65.

Susac had been in a small slump.  Strong start for Escobar in a really tough place to pitch.  Hembree has 13 K's against just 2 BB's over 7.2 IP, in his last 10 appearances.

AA Trenton Thunder rolled over the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-1:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(20).  BA= .310.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .268.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 2.44.

Strong start for Blach.  He's pitched well this season as his ERA shows, but this one was a bit more dominant by peripheral numbers.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Visalia Rawhide 6-2:

Chuckie Jones(RF)- 2 for 5, Assist(home).  BA= .224.
Brett Krill(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .200.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .306.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.09.

Nice bounceback start for Flores after a disaster start on 5/17.

Low A  Greenville Drive blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 2-0:

Matt Lujan(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.44.

All 4 minor league starters had strong outings yesterday.

  1. FINALLY! A day of pitching performances by some of our favorite guys. A day like today makes me think the young MiL stable could overcome these early challenges and really get rolling at some point this season.

Fascinating that Blach has been pitching so well by ERA, when I don't remember him having a single overly impressive start to this point. Certainly his peripherals haven't been impressive - 4.1 K/9. But the WHIP is good, and he's keeping guys from hitting it hard. Very low BABIP right now, so this would be a great time for him to find his groove, since he's been a bit lucky to this point it seems.

Love seeing Flores do well. I really like guys with beastly K/BB ratios plus good K/9, and Flores was that kid in Augusta.

  2. Panik is going to force the Giants' hand, especially if Hicks falters. I know he has big hits, but not sure how you can keep up the race with a .200 starting 2b. We've largely dodged the bullet of Belt out, but we have 5 weeks to go and Doyers are heating up. Need De Paula and Escobar to keep it up and get their act together. And if Kontos falters, and Hembree keeps it up, hopefully Giants pull the trigger on that.

    1. Don't pay too much attention to that .200 BA, as it's misleading. With a .323 wOBA and 108 wRC+, he's been a slightly above average offensive player. He's having a comparable year to Ben Zobrist, Dee Gordon, and Dustin Pedroia. I doubt anyone in their cities are calling for their heads. Not to mention that his .225 BABIP is sure to normalize a bit (although not too much with his 50% FB rate) and will bring up his slash numbers.
