Game Wrap 4/25/2014: Giants 5 Indians 1

The top of the lineup led the way on offense in support of a resolute pitching performance by Tim Hudson as the Giants cruised to the win. Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, SB(4). BA= .337. Pagan is banged up with a bruised patella and a partial tear of a tendon, but was back setting the table in this one, showing no signs of being slowed up. Hunter

Pence- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .250. Pence has officially broken out of his season opening slump. The triple was a looonnggg liner that started out nearly straightaway CF, but it had major tailing action that carried it at least 30 feet to the right of Michael Bourn and he never had a chance.

Michael Morse- 1 for 2, HR(6), SF. BA= .286. Maybe it's still too soon to say, but it looks like Sabes may have caught lightning in a bottle again with the Morse signing. I think Bochy deserves a big Assist on this one too as he was the one who really lobbied for Morse, or at least a big bat for LF.

Tim Hudson- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.19.  Huddy finally walked, not just 1 but 2 batters which counts for struggling in Huddy's world. The first 3 innings were a bit scuffly, but he settled down and cruised through the last 4 of his start.

The Tribe stacked the lineup with LH batters, so Bochy used Affeldt and Lopez to finish up in the non-Save situation. They pitched a scoreless inning each.

With the Win, the Giants climbed into first place in the NL West by 0.5 games over the Rockies and Dodgers after the Rockies beat the Dodgers in extra innings 5-4. Both teams are at 13-11. The 4'th place Padres were crushed by the Nationals 11-1 to fall 2.5 games off the pace. The last place D'Backs won their 3'rd in a row topping the Phillies 5-4. The D'Backs are now 6.5 games out.

Tim Lincecum faces RHP Zach McAllister in Game 2 of the inter league series this afternoon.

  1. Indians scored a run Doc.

Morse is looking great. Stay healthy! The guys at fangraphs will go frantically digging at his dWAR.

Buster needs to bust out of this brutal slump.

1st place baby! Hope Angel Pagan can play through this, he's pretty key to the team.

    1. I loved watching and listening to Kuiper play for the Giants back in the day. Scrapper dude for sure. I much prefer his quick wit to Krukow these days. I met him in Scottsdale last years ST, he is a total chiller. Good for the Indians announcers.

The trade before the Kuip trade with the Tribe? Yup, the Perry one. Took 10 years for them to trade again!

  3. On Morse... Only 77 PAs so far, but he's slashing 286/338/600. His career slash is 282/335/478.

I just checked back on my post on his signing (http://www.yougottalikethesekids.com/2013/12/the-beast-commeth.html) if you don't mind Doc, here's the Gigantes LF's from last year: 257/314/337

Mean Bruce Bochy is turbo charging his lineup so far. Morse is at -0.5 in dWAR for F/G. 19 putouts in 21 games, 6 games he's been left in the whole time. Any specific memory of him just not having the range to get to a ball?

One of my "warnings" is that Morse sprays the ball to all fields. There has been a lot of talk recently about how he's best when he's looking other way and up the middle (I think Schulman has been hammering this one). He has the power to get that ball out of the park at any time, something the Giants haven't had since Barry. Maybe that is more important than folks realized.

    1. Yes, my one in-person game of the year, was out in the Bleachers with my brother on April 10th for "Farewell to Stick" Night. Morse looked very pedestrian to me out in LF (one could say almost "Machine-like"). That being said, he went 2-4 with 2 doubles, and 2 RBIs! I like him and think that it was a smart move to sign him. Hopefully he continues to emulates his non-injured Nats play and helps the Good Guys get their third Championship in 5 years!
