Down on the Farm: 4/13/2014

AAA  Las Vegas 51's pounded the Fresno Grizzlies 10-4:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(5), BB.  BA= .311.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.52.

Duvall is red hot at the plate!  Unimpressive start for Kickham.

AA   Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Altoona Curve 7-3:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .308.
Brett Krill(RF)-  3 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .241.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.18.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.23.

Angel V is swinging a hot bat.  Give him time!  Marte is quietly climbing the organization ladder.  I think his stuff is underrated.  Can get up to 92-93 on the FB and has a nice change and breaking ball to back it up.

High A  Bakersfield Blaze scorched the San Jose Giants 10-4:

Elliott Blair(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .387.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Not a lot to say about this one.  Blair seems to be a late bloomer who the Giants must like or they would not have kept him around all this time.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets edged the Charleston River Dogs 3-2:

Brandon Bednar(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .378.
Christian Arroyo(2B)- BA= .200
Tyler Horan(RF)- 4 for 4, 2B.  BA= .344.
Matthew Lujan(LHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.38.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.90.

Bednar stays hot.  Horan and Bednar might deserve to be in San Jose.  Lujan is older and needs to do this at a higher level to be a serious prospect.  Nice appearance by Slania.

  1. I've always wondered if Duvall can have a career like Mark Trumbo.

Remember once reading an article on about top prospects and Villalona was name as the next David Ortiz, damn!!!

Still think he can have a solid career

    1. Trumbo is not too far off for a Duvall Comp. Every time I think about Duvall, the first MLB name that pops into my head is Mike Napoli.

And yeah, great news that came out a week or two ago that the Giants have 2 more seasons after this one to develop Villalona's bat in the minors. It's still very raw, but getting better fast and the power is so legit.

    2. What's this about AnVil? getting two more years minors time? I suppose they are both option years.

Was it from Pav or Bags or Haft or behind some paywall site or what? Missed that bit of news.

    3. Came from Bobby Evans in an interview with either Baggs or Alex P. Not sure which one now. It was part of an answer to a question about the 40 man roster and why Angel V is still on it.

  2. I was at the Saturday night Grizzlies game and Dice K dazzled Grizzlies lineup for 7 innings. Duvall did not look bad at third. Throws were on the money. No pressure put on the throws and no need to range. He did have to dive to his on a ball he had none chance on. Dice K handled him, but Duvall did have a line drive hit off one of the 51's relievers.

Erik Cordier was running it up fom 96-98 but judging by the hitters reactions, it didn't seem like there was much late movement. His control looked good and hitters were having trouble pulling trigger on slider.

    1. If Cordier had any kind of control, he's a guy we could really use in the SF pen right now. Personally, I wish Hembree was up right now. Yes, he's unproven, but some of the guys at the back end of the current pen are proven and still scare me. If there's any thought at all that Romo might not be back next season, it's time to get Heath some MLB experience.

Good to hear Duvall didn't beat himself at 3B. He's really on a tear lately.

  3. While Susac and Panik are cooling down a bit, Duvall is hitting the cover off the ball. I need to start watching those Fresno games a little more closely, see how he looks at 3B. Heck, maybe they should try him in LF, just to see if he can hold his own.
