Down on the Farm: 4/7/2014

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4:

Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, 3B, HBP.  BA= .350.
Andrew Susac(Catcher)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .500.
Tony Abreu(2B)- 1 for 1, HR(1).  BA= .313.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 4 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 11.25.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Erik Cordier(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 13.50.

Second game in a row at SS for Panik.  I noticed he seemed to hit better on days he played SS last year too.  Abreu came out after the dinger and was replaced by Ciriaco.  Gotta think he's hurting.  Giants think Dunning can go long in relief.  Looks like they are prepping him for that role.  At this point, Heston is just filling out the rotation.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Bowie Baysox rained out.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9'th to top the San Jose Giants 2-1:

Joe Biagini(RHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 10.13.

There is some reason why the Giants are being extraordinarily patient with Biagini.  Let's see if he can keep this up.  Okert has been lights out so far.  This is the second time in 3 games that Mizenko has given up the only runs of the game by a Giants pitcher in the bottom of the 9'th for a walk-off loss.  He could be in the hot seat in the closer role.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Savannah Sand Gnats postponed by rain.

  1. Seems like Galindo had a crazy day.
    Single in 1st.
Bunt in Third, Safe on Throwing error by the pitcher and reached second. Brown to Third on the play and would score on an RBI ground-out.
Reached base on an error by the Third baseman in the 8th. Another bunt maybe?
At some point he stole Second. At some point he got picked off second/CS Third.
Anyone know what went on here?

    1. KV, quite funny really. Galindo's last CS, he stole second. Then he went for third on four straight pitches (all fouls). Finally the pitcher threw to second and picked him off. Just WOW. I know Galindo stole something like 47 bases last year, but this was holding out a yard sign saying, "I'm Going". Too much.

  2. Seems like Panik has been playing SS exclusively. Say, what happened to Nick Noonan? Grizz could not bring Panik home following a leadoff triple in 9th. Nice start of season for Joe P.

Isn't Mizenko known for the turbo sinker? These are some Edelfsen #'s from him. Maybe just walks and BABIP. Mac Williamson must be not be feeling it. Ain't doing much of anything.

    1. Very poor start for Mac. Maybe they should just let him rest up a bit instead of trying to play through his injury... that's my thought, anyway. Weird to me that Panik is playing SS again as well. I think Noonan is hurt.

Speaking of injuries, Martin Agosta is suddenly on the 7-day DL. SJ rotation starts over today, with Stratton taking the hill. I wonder what is wrong with Agosta. Sounds like he just celebrated a bday this week... but he can't be too happy about sitting it out right now.

    2. Blah Blah Blah Anon. Get a handle Debbie.

First of all, Mark Ellis gets signed every year because he's the type of grinder that teams want on their side. He's been worth 2-4 WAR consistently throughout his career. Take a look at Panik's swing - extremely level, line-drive style. Stays in the zone a long time. I love his swing really, an I think when he gets a few other things figured out, he'll start putting up very strong avg and obp numbers. From SS or 2B, that's got tremendous value.

    3. Nice RB. Yep, we'll take a player in the Scutaro/Ellis mold any time. Maybe there's a Jed Lowrie in there somewhere. That guy has some pop.

    4. Perhaps it was a fluke year for Mac, but I'm willing to let him get fully healthy (there's a reason he's DHing in SJ instead of starting in RF in Richmong) before I made any such assessment.

At this point of the Giants competitive lifecycle, they got the core players they need to win some more championships, so even if Joe Panik is nothing more than a Mark Ellis type, that's perfect for the Giants because he'll be the cheap complementary players we need in order to carry the expensive contracts we have for Posey, Pence, Pagan, and probably Belt soon, as well as for the expensive pitchers too. Same with Brown, if he can deliver 2-3 WAR just from defense. The Giants can't afford to pay for all the free agents who can put up Ellis numbers ($5-6M per year) at every position, they need to have some cheap starters as well. If Susac, Panik, and Brown can join the team and contribute like an Ellis, that's perfect for the team, giving us three more cheap position players.

In any case, I think people are aiming too low with Panik, he should be at least an Ellis type, but I think a better comp would be Scutaro, a guy with some power, walks a lot, don't strike out too much, matching walks and strikeouts roughly, grinder defensively at 2B, smart ballplayer.

And I understand your sentiments about not hitting in AA, but that don't mean that they can't learn to hit after that or that something in AA was affecting his performance. Again, we are not expecting a star out of Panik at 2B for us, if he can be a Scutaro type, that is more than good enough for the Giants to continue to win championships with the players we got.

    5. The injury/rehab/wait around on Mac W might be a TJ scare. Don't have enough info yet, but its something to do with his elbow I fear. Hope this is bad info.

Also, Jeff Arnold is out for the year. Bad break for him.

    6. Wow, I hadn't heard that about Arnold. That's really too bad. Great guy, and really a mentor for that young staff. I was under the impression Mac had a shoulder issue, not elbow. Either way, there might not be an easy fix if it's something serious.

I love hearing people write Panik off. The guy is 23, and doesn't turn 24 until Halloween... and he's in AAA, right on schedule. Give me a break!

    1. I think I just listened to the SJ Radio guy (Ritzo?) tell me that Lancaster has a prospect stacked rotation (for once).
