Down on the Farm: 4/27/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes 5-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, CS(4).  BA= .281.
Joe Panik(2B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .315.
Tyler Colvin(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .234.
Jason Berken(RHP)- 7 IP, 3 Hk 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.48.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Zach Lee(RHP, Isotopes)- 3.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.42.

I think this is Brown's third 3-hit game with a double and triple.  The CS's continue to limit his effectiveness.  Berken is looking like another successful reclamation project.  Will he get a MLB opportunity?  Lee is a former first round draft pick by the Dodgers.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the New Britain Rock Cats 7-5:

Derek Law- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(5).  ERA= 0.96.

The Squirrels did not have a batter with more than 1 hit and had just one XBH with Lisson hitting a 2 run HR.

High A  Bakersfield Blaze scorched the San Jose Giants 10-2:

Mitch Delfino(3B)- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .308.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.04.

Another unimpressive start for Stratton.

Low A  Asheville Tourists beat the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:

Nothing to see here.

There!  All caught up!

  1. Thanks DrB.

I am baffled by Stratton and Agosta. Neither one of them looks impressive at all in the early going. Strattong was completely out-dueled by Ben Lively (Cincy's 2013 4th round pick), who might be off to the best start in all of MiLB... 5-0, 0.31, 29 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 40 K. That guy was pitching in Rookie League Billings last year, and now he's carving up the CAL. Holy smokes!
Hembree and Law continue to dominate. Add Okert and Big Dan Slania to those two, and you might have the only 4 consistent relief pitching prospects in the organization this month. So many of the others have either been injured or incredibly wild to this point. Hopefully that trend changes in May.
Speaking of injuries, Andrew Susac has been on the DL for a few days. Never did hear what caused that, but I'm a bit bummed to seen him hit the DL so soon in the year.

    1. Me too on Susac. He needs reps, and he needs to show he's durable enough to stay in.

Possibly worse news though is that Mac Williamson was sent to extended spring training today.

Ben Lively is tearing it up something fierce!

I'm pretty down on Stratton at this point. He hasn't shown much at all. 20th overall, there are some big expectations. He has not met them.

    2. Mac=TJ, unfortunately. Sounds like the season's over for him, with the focus now on getting ready for next year asap.

Rough news, but without a doubt he'll put this behind him.

    3. Haven't seen it verified but that was my fear, TJ for Mac. Tough break. Losing Jeff Arnold was a tough break as well, it might have a little to do with the Richmond rotation scuffling some.

    4. Where is everyone hearing this about Mac? I haven't seen a thing...

    5. Just found a reference in Rotoworld which references the SF Chronicle. Mac has UCL damage and is being evaluated for possible TJ surgery.

    6. Susac is on the 7 day DL with a concussion.

    7. Come on CC, I posted up the rumor about 2 weeks ago, right here.

  2. That's sad news for Mac. You don't usually hear of that for a position player.

Totally off subject, does anyone have any prospect tips for players currently in the Minors who might make an impact in the Majors this year? I'm in an AL-only fantasy league (out of my element because I'm an NL-guy). I know it's a long shot but I appreciate the help!

    1. If its not a keeper league I would steer clear of rookies and take the more sure bets of likely production and consistency. Sometimes you get that rookie jump out and surprise but most the time they come back to earth quickly. Mookie Betts is tearing up the Eastern, and there's Cecchini and Bradley but the Red Sox have a lot of players in front of them. Henry Owens, yet another BoSox, is getting to the cusp as well. But hey, so is Joltin' Joe Panik. Lets not 2nd guess too much here!

Every once in a while there's a Jose Fernandez type that can kill as a 20 year old, but most of the time rookies in fantasy are good for fill in more than year long production. Marcus Stroman might get the call soon, that's a gamble right there that could go either way. And if you want to keep with the undersized righties... Trevor Bauer has had some good games in the minors, he might get another shot soon. He might be owned, might not, there's a lot of burn out with him right now.

    2. Thanks Shankbone! I really appreciate the help. It's a non-keeper league so your advice it well taken. I think Stroman and Bauer might have some potential but you're right, can't hope that they'll be contributors for the whole season. They'll probably be pretty streaky.

    3. Mac was a pitcher before he got converted to OF in college, if I recall the sequence right.

  3. Is Travis Ishikawa back with the Giants? I think I saw his name on a Fresno box score the other day.

    1. Nope. You just stepped in and out of a time warp. Bet big on the Giants to win the 2010 WS. I know, it sounds crazy.

    2. The Pirates designated him for the minors when they got Ike Davis from the Mets, and Travis refused the reassignment. He signed a minor league deal with the Giants that he can leave if they don't put him on the 25man roster (by some date, that some guessed might be June).

  4. Question/s for Doc & the crowd:

Are the Giants pitchers in AA or below going fastball heavy right now? Are they withholding breaking pitches until arm strength is up? In lieu of the breaking pitch are they focusing on the changeup?

Might this formula be the main reason for some unimpressive lines in the month of April?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. The best guy to answer that question would be Conner Penfold over on Giant Potential, linked to the left.
