Down on the Farm: 4/11/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlied defeated the Las Vegas 51's 5-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .317.
Tyler Colvin(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .194.
Jason Berken(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

Brown made the most of his one hit driving in 3 runs.  Berken may be a viable backup plan for SP/long relief.  Runzler could become a factor if a need arises in the bullpen.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Altoona Curve 5-4:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .375.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .324.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.00.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 3.12.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.38.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Mejia got winged by a comebacker in the first inning.  He did not come out immediately, but I assume that has something to do with his early departure.  Derek Law continues to be lights out and gets the W.  Matt Duffy!!

High A  Bakersfield Blaze topped the San Jose Giants 5-2:

Martin Agosta(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Nothing else to see here.  Good to see Agosta apparently healthy and pitching.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Charleston River Dogs 8-1:

Brandon Bednar(3B)-  2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .361.
Ryder Jones(SS)- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .207.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.69.

A few more walks from Mella than we are used to seeing, but he was not very hittable and the K rate was solid.  Jones back at SS and Arroyo at 2B.

  1. Brownie is certainly re-establishing himself. Interesting situation with Morse playing well. I'm not sure that they would use Brown as a reserve, unless Blanco or JP get hurt, but certainly Brown could be playing himself into the equation. I could see if he has turned the corner, Pagan moving back to LF but we'd need to have power to replace Morse. Nice options to have.

Pitching is sick, sick, sick. Just no two ways about it. Only problem is there are a lot of guys "in the way" in the big club, but again great problem to have.

    1. I would think it will be at least mid-season before Brown becomes a consideration at the MLB level and then only if there is an injury. With Morse signed for just one year, there will be an opening in the OF in 2015.

  2. Bounced around a couple of the games last night, and caught Tyler Graham hitting a leadoff triple for the Squirrels in the 6th, with Duffy tying the game at one apiece with a sharp rbi double to left center, but got stranded. Altoona then answered with three more in the 8th, making it 4-1 and most of the crowd of 10K headed for the gates. Should have stuck around, as the ending got interesting.

Squirrels answered with two more runs in B9, Tyler Graham hit a clutch 2-rbi double to make it 4-3. Duffy came up with two down, had a great AB and ran the count full, then hit a soft chopper to short for what should have only been a game-tying infield single, but SS Alen Hanson booted it (literally) and the winning run scored for an improbable walkoff soft chopper/error and a win for Derek Law.

Sounded berserk out there. Nice battle-back win for the Squirrels.

  3. Question for Doc & the gang:

What do you think the chances are that Adrianza would clear waivers?

2nd question - is any kind of compensation required for a waiver claim at this juncture - trade or cash - or does team with claim just pick him up and have to put him on 25 man?

    thanks in advance

    1. I'd say 50-50 on waiver claim for Adrianza. No compensation unless a trade is worked out. No rush, since it sounds like Scooter ain't coming back anytime soon.

    2. No, no Scutaro soon; but someone needs to go to make room for Affeldt, and Bochy has talked about moving to thirteen pitchers when A returns.

    3. I'd say 70% chance he'd be claimed.

    4. We probably need 13 pitchers.

Creative use of the DL may be needed.

    5. Bochy said that they have discussed possibly going with 13 pitchers by sending down Perez, who still has options, but that they have not decided on what the best route to handling Affeldt's return.

I think that there is a very good chance (70-80%) that Adrianza gets claimed, he's shown an OK bat in the minors and was having a nice bounceback with Fresno last season, plus he has his superlative glove. Right now, he looks like he could be a Blanco type MI. I could see a rebuilding team like Cubs or Astros pick him up and just option out somebody.

Luckily, no reason to wonder what happens if he gets waived, Scutaro does not even sound close to returning, my expectations is that he's probably out to the All-Star break, then rejoin the team after a rehab in SJ, starting in August, much like in 2012. If his back bothered him into spring, they probably can milk it out until then, at which point, he has said that he could play, but then what happens in the next game, so he could come back and shuffle in and out of the lineup, then gut it out during the playoffs.

When a player is waived right now, the team loses him for nothing if another team claims him (but then they take over responsibility for his contract with the team). Later in the season, there are revoke-able waivers, where they can chose to take him back off waivers, but still the other team can claim him if his team does not take him off waivers. There is a clause where if the player has enough years as a minor leaguer (don't remember how much, but Waldis Joaquin did it), he can refuse the waiver claim of the other team and declare himself a free agent (I think when the prospect has 6 years as a minor leaguer; Joaquin did it to avoid the ChiSox's claim, then re-signed with the Giants). At some point, not sure when, a player can be designated for assignment (or the ol' DFA), giving the team 10 days to work out a trade with someone or the waiver claim goes through.

  4. Wonder if Dan Runzler ever makes it back to the show with us? One thing our pen has lacked since Wilson went down was power. His failure to develop has been a big factor in that imo. Some weird rule about his rehab time not counting as minor league service time kept him from becoming a 6 year MILB FA.

For nostalgia sake I hope he has a solid year in AAA and can at least get September call up. He hast the stuff, just needs to control it.
