Down on the Farm: 4/10/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies pounded the Salt Lake City Bees 11-4:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .316.
Joe Panik(SS)- 1 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .294.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 5, HR(3), BB.  BA= .286.
Javier Herrera(DH)- 4 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .333.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 7.27.
Erik Cordier(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. ERA= 9.00.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.29.

Duvall can airmail throws to 1B next year for a lot less money than Pablo.  I think Duvall's bat plays in the majors.  Mixed results for Escobar with lots of K's but some hits and walks too.  Cordier's K/BB got a lot better with this game.  Could we see Melonhead Jr. in the majors this year?

AA  Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 SB(6).  BA= .370.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Blackburn had nice peripherals but was maybe a bit too hittable.  We've seen that from him in the past at times.

High A  San Jose Giants topped the Bakersfield Blaze 5-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .357.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .192.
Ben Turner(C)- 2 for 4.  BA= .391.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.00.

Galindo is off to a hot start.  Gregorio had the the best pitching line of the organization for the day.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Charleston River Dogs 5-1:

Brandon Bednar(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .355.
Matthew Chavez(DH)- 4 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .333.
Cristian Paulino(RF) 2 for 3, BB, 3 SB(5).  BA= .250.
Luis Ysla(LHP)- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 4.26.
Carlos Alvarado(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.  ERA= 0.00
Dan Slania(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, Save(1).  ERA= 1.29.

Paulino seems like potentially a dynamic player.  Bat needs to develop.

  1. Javier Herrera can still swing it. I watched most of Esky's start. They hit him pretty good to open it up, putting 2 runs on the board before he could blink. After that, I thought he adjusted nicely. For a couple of innings, he was nearly unhittable, racking up the K's. I honestly liked what I saw. I didn't (fortunately) see the play where Darren Ford collided with the OF wall. Sounds like he was taken off the field by ambulance, and I'm hearing this morning that he only suffered a concussion... could have been much, much worse from the reports of how he hit the wall.

    1. Just a note DocB - I believe all three runs scored on Escobar were earnies. Kid is warming up, he's probably feeling the pressure, too.

    2. The big news was Ford. Glad he appears to be OK, he didn't lose consciousness. He will most likely have a concussion though. Scary play.

  2. Gary Brown wants to take walks and hit dingerz? Alright alright alright...

I'm willing to give young Clayton some time to get settled. I hope he's taking his conditioning seriously. Each level is a new adjustment and he's one of the youngest in the league.

  3. If the Nat's can get away with an arthritic shouldered Ryan Zimmerman at third, maybe the G's can hang with Duvall next year.

  4. I have heard of cloying by committee, but it looks like Augusta is adopting a starting by committee approach: 3 pitchers with 3.1, 2.2, and 3 IP. :)
