Dr B's 2014 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #39 Brandon Bednar

Brandon Bednar, INF.  B-R, T-R.  6'4", 185 lbs.  DOB:  3/21/2992.

College:  .336/.394/.441, 1 HR, 7 SB, 15 BB, 10 HBP, 23, 247 AB.
SS:  .272/.332/.406, 6 HR, 11 SB, 14 BB, 28 K, 202 AB.

Brandon Bednar was drafted as a college SS out of Florida Gulf Coast U in the 7'th round of the 2013 draft.  He appeared in just one AZL game before spending the rest of the summer at Salem-Keizer.  He played several positions at Salem-Keizer including 17 at SS, 9 at 3B and 20 at 2B.  He is currently listed as a 2B in his milb.com profile page.  He did make a total of 14 errors in just 46 games.

He is tall and thin.  The most common adjective I found in scouting reports to describe him was "athletic."  Every pre-draft scouting report I found said he was athletic enough to stick at SS.  His swing was described at "level" and "line drive" producing.  I saw several comments about power potential.

He hit just 2 HR's in 3 seasons of college ball then 6 in his pro debut, so it would not surprise me if the Giants haven't already made some adjustments in his swing plane.  I kind of see a bit of a RH version of Brandon Belt in this guy given his tall, lanky yet athletic physique.  Bednar is a bit hacky, with walk rates a little over 5% but fits a recent trend in Giants draftees by keeping his K's down below 15%.

I have no idea where he will be placed for 2014.  I could see him being placed in San Jose, possibly as a utility guy playing multiple positions.  I could even see him being moved to the OF at some point.  His MLB future, if he has one, is probably as utility guy, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking Michael Morse was a shortstop once upon a time.

  1. The guy I really wanted at this draft position was Terry McClure who went to the Rocks. Bednar seems like a jack of all trades master of none, but the lanky tall frame might have some goodness to unlock.

Giants just cut some names - hitters include Sam Eberle from 2012 and 8th rounder Jean Delgado from 2011. Hard as hell to play pro ball.

The Mariners released best name of the 2012 class Jamodrick McGruder.

    1. I really liked Jamodrick Magruder. MI with game changing speed. Bat was always a little suspect, though. Eberle seemed to have good power, but not a lot else, and no real place to play. Thins out the 1B logjam at Augusta just a bit.
