Scouting the Draft: Hunter Renfroe

Hunter Renfroe is a player who may be getting some major traction in 2013 draft rankings.  He's a guy whose college career has developed slowly, but he has performed well in wood bat summer leagues and is in the midst of a major breakout in his junior year in college at Mississippi State.

Renfroe has played OF, C and RHP, but seems to have settled into RF this year.  He's got terrific size at 6'2", 211 lbs, B-R, T-R.  He probably doesn't have CF range in the OF, but has a plus arm, so could be a defensive asset as a RF in the right ballpark and right CF playing next to him.  What really stands out about him is the bat which has terrific power potential, with a solid hit tool to back it up.

Here are his stat lines for college and summer league ball:

2011 NCAA:                   .154/.233/.192 in 26 AB.
2011 Cal Ripkin League:  .305/.371/.581 with 8 HR in 105 AB.  #1 prospect in the 2011 Cal Ripkin League.
2012 NCAA:                   .257/.333/.381 with 4 HR in 218 AB.
2012 Cal Ripkin League:  .366/.469/,866 with 16 HR in 134 AB. He hit 3 more HR in their championship series.
2013 NCAA:                   .433/.464/.883 with 6 HR in 60 AB.

  1. Really like this guy. It appears he is putting it together big time. Useless trivia: he has a sweet bat flip, and the Bethesda Big Train retired his number following his being named the MVP of the Cal Ripken League. "Though one number 11 hangs on the outfield wall at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda where the Big Train play, an additional number 11 was placed at the top of the right field light pole in reference to the extreme distance of his home runs." Light tower power baby!

I would think he'd be a 2nd/3rd rounder John Barr special, but if he keeps on hitting he'll have to get snagged in the first. 9 Ks/2BB/4HBP in those 60AB so far.

    1. ....and Chris Stratton is from Mississippi State.

    2. Renfroe does seem like a perfect John Barr 2'nd round draft pick if he's still there by the time the Giants are on the board.

    3. He reminds me a bit of Mac Williamson with the athleticism, plus arm and plus power. Speaking of Mac, Baggs just tweeted: Williamson had terrific short-season debut last year. He's currently working with the Double-A group. That tells you something. (3 HRs in intrasquad game)

  2. On a recent chat, it was interesting to read Baggs mention 3 prospects with "light tower" power, Mac Williamson, Ricky O, and Angel V. Surprised that Adam Duvall wasn't mentioned. It would be fun to watch RickyO, Mac W, and Duvall crushing Hrs for the same AA team.

  3. Renfro killed it this past weekend vs. Kentucky. 5 for 9 with 3hr, 5rbi's, and 3BB. He is now hitting .425 with 9hr and 35rbi's. I am really hoping he falls to the Giants now.
