Game Wrap Spring Training 2013: Giants 13 A's 9

The Giants pounded out a win an a hitfest in the desert today.  Key Lines:

Juan Perez- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .182.

Brock "Barry" Bond- 2 for 2, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .429.   I think Bond already has more XBH's this spring than he's had in some full seasons.

Gary Brown- 1 for 1, 3B.  BA= .300.  Will Brownie get more PT during the WBC?

Brandon Belt- 3 for 4.  BA= .429.  Gotta be feeling some excitement over the possibilities for Belt this season.

Angel Villalona- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .286.  Angel V hits a dinger!

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .600!  Frankie Pegs is red hot.  Great time to impress the manager for future reference.

Kensuke Tanaka- 1 for 1, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .167.  Tanaka seems to have gotten untracked in the last 2 games.

Madison Bumgarner- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 2.45. It's a long spring training so gotta keep the SP pitch counts down early.

Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.00.

George Kontos- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Justin Fitzgerald- 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 13.50.

Interesting piece about Noah Lowry on CSN Bay Area.  Sounds like the hard feelings toward the Giants have passed.  Current diagnosis seems to be cervical disk disease rather than either compartment syndrome or thoracic outlet syndrome.  Maybe they could give him an invite to spring training to teach a kid or two that sweet changeup?

    1. Also, BtB had a post on A-Gon and so I dug into his stats. While I can't say that he'll have a bad 2013, there are some signs that things are on the decline for him, and for a while now, and that 2012 might just be a crack that will widen over time, and LA still have him for another 5 seasons (to 2018). He could be another deal like Helton where he's OK overall but horrible value return.

    2. i saw that about Crawford. Initial diagnosis is nerve irritation, which can be a bad sign after TJ surgery. Start of the season in doubt.

From the Extra Giants report, it sounds like Tanaka is really struggling with SS. He has said he is willing to start the season in Fresno.

    3. BTW, thanks for the replies, guys. I was starting to wonder if something was blocking them or something.

  2. I just read this pretty cool story about Brock Bond by Andy Baggarly. I'll be rooting for this kid to do well.

    1. One fascinating angle to the Brock Bond story is that Bochy has become very intrigued by the guy from looking at his minor league OBP's! I'm sure it comes as a shock to the naysayers that Bochy even knows what OBP is let alone what some relatively obscure minor league player's OBP is.

  3. This is the kind of performance that stands out: Gonzaga vs. (3) Arkansas: Marco Gonzales (9 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K) threw a shutout in Gonzaga's 3-0 upset.

    Yeah Marco.

Lowry should teach the kids these days how to wear a lid as well. One of my favorite Giants for sure.

Saw a pic of Angel V on BASG's blog, he didn't look half bad. I'm sure he gets kicked to minor league camp soon. Augusta or San Jose? Tis the question.

I'm curious how Gary Brown does at the end of camp when the scrubs have gone home. I hope they let him stay til the end.

    1. Appel came correct, and Kevin Ziomek K'd 15 which will get ink, but it was against Illinois-Chicago, so I gotta step back on that one. What about 2014 lefty Travis Radke though? Takes down UC Irvine: (6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 11 K) shut down the Anteaters in Portland's 2-0 upset. John Klima loves him some Radke, who seems a very Giants-ey pitching profile:

Dillon Overton got shelled a bit by Pepperdine.

So far the HS guys from 2012 who look good are Bregman (first HR the other day for LSU!) and Skye Bolt, Captain of Tomorrow, at UNC.

    2. Between Gary Brown, Frankie and Roger K, it's looking more and more like maybe the Giants don't need to sign Hunter Pence to a big, long extension?

BTW, did you see Bochy has a nickname for Peguero? Pegs!

    3. Apparently the curmudgeon gave him that nickname a couple years back. One of his best contributions.

I really like Sabean's quote on Pence: “He’s got light tower power and our park in general is geared to a right-handed power hitter,” Sabean said. “Besides, he doesn’t have to hit home runs to be successful. Just have quality at-bats, shore up his on-base percentage, get hits with runners in scoring position.

“He’s got a lot in his favor. He’s always been known as a good all-around player and those are hard to find. Especially in the National League, it’s such a dangerous combination to find a player who can do things in the lineup and contribute on the defensive side, too.

“And he’s very committed. It doesn’t take much to motivate him.”

I think Pence is exactly Sabean's type of player, the kind he was hoping that Rowand would be. Like Rowand, the sliders seem to be an issue. That's definitely a good B questionmark to the future of Timmy Lincecum with the Gints.

    4. As long as Brown is doing well, I expect the Giants to keep him around to the end, I mean, he's expected to be in AAA this season, so may as well get as many looks at him until he proves that he needs more AAA time.

I think there are other mitigating factors in whether Pence gets signed long term or not. Of course, there are the OF's. But it will also depend on what the Giants think if Sandoval long-term as well, cause if they expect his bat to be gone in a couple of years, then you might need to sign Pence long term. Also, there is the question of Belt, whether he can also take that leap up to team leader of offense, if he can do that, then Pence is not as necessary, but if he stumbles badly, then keeping Pence around would be good. I also think that if Lincecum ends up signed long-term, that might take up most of the money available, so signing Pence long-term might be impossible at that point.

But I agree that Pence is exactly what the Giants were hoping to get when they signed Rowand.
