Game Wrap Spring Training 2013: Giants 9 Cubs 7; Royals 9 Giants 5

Split squads  and the Giants had split outcomes with lots of scoring.  Key Lines:

Giants vs Cubs:

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .167.

Kensuke Tanaka- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .235.  3 good games at the plate in a row for Tanaka.

Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .500.  I could have sworn Sandoval had already homered once this spring.

Adam Duvall- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .143.

Johnny Monell- 2 for 4.  BA= .667. Monell was the DH today.

Yusmeiro Petit- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Petit got the start in place of Timmy, who had a blister on the middle fingers of his right hand.  Nice outing for Petit.  He is out of options.

Jake Dunning- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Giants vs Royals:

Gary Brown- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .267.

Brandon Belt- 4 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .526.  Whoa!  Stay hot, kid!

Angel Villalona- 0 for 4, 4 K's.  BA= .182.  Not a good day at the plate for Angel V.

Hector Sanchez- 1 for 2, 3B.  BA= .300.  I don't recall seeing Hector hit any triples last year.  That would be fun to watch!

Boof Bonser- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Boof makes his spring debut.

Mike Kickham- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.00.

Fabio Castillo- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 48.60.  Castillo probably won't be making the 25 man roster.

Brett Bochy- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 10.80.  A bit better than his first spring appearance.

Jose Valdez- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  It wasn't easy, but he got out of the inning.

  1. I was watching the KCR and SFG game on the MLB At Bat application on my iPad (totally worth it if you got a smart phone because you get radio feed for free to take with you anywhere)and I got to see some interesting MPH readings.

Wasn't paying 100% attetnion to the game at all times, but did notice some of the following interesting nuggets.

Bochy was 87-88mph with is fastball
Kickham was 90-91mph with his fastball
Jose Valdez was sitting 92-93 and got his strike out with a 94mph high heater.
Villalona K'd on sliders away in his last 2 at bats.

    1. Well, I wouldn't write of Trout for the Angels quite yet. Time and money heals most wounds. It does seem to be a bit of a slap in the face to Trout, though.

    2. That is the way I felt when Bumgarner had his contract renewed by the Giants after 2010 at the Giants salary, that Madison would not sign with us long-term, let alone into this free agent years. I don't recall what type of salary he got relative to before, so maybe he got some sort of raise.

Of course, we now know that he signed long-term with us INTO his free agency years at a very reasonable contract.

Also of course, everybody is different. Now that I know more about Madison's background growing up, I can see now why he might have let that slide. Trout is undoubtedly not the same situation. That said, again, I didn't think Madison would sign after he got his contract handed to him by the Giants.

It will be interesting to see how mature and responsible and professional Trout will be in 2013 due to this slap to the face.

But I thought last season was his first season, so he won't be eligible for arbitration until 2015 or after the 2014 season, if that is what you mean by "come 14".

    3. obsessive,

the dif between giants and halos, is that giants were pretty clear that they were reorganizing to spend more on their rotation and the other kids coming up....halos have spent a ton on fa that have done little....wouldve been in their best interest to have rewarded trout with at least a 1.5 contract

and from what ive read, trout is eligible for arbitration come 2014...if he chooses to go with the arbitration and not a long term....will make teams like the yanks, bosox, rangers, braves, phils and bums, very happy

    4. I gotta say, I think this is mostly a tempest in a teapot. Mike Trout is going to do what is best for Mike Trout and a few $hundred K's is not going to significantly alter the dynamics. The biggest difference between Trout and Bumgarner is that pitchers have to be more aware of the possibility of career ending injury so they might tend to favor the security of a long term deal over maximizing their yearly income.
