In a microcosm of the Giants season so far, Heliot Ramos LF probably hit a home run in the second inning that probably hit a catwalk but was ruled a flyout on instant replay. You could all but see the air going out of the Giants sails at that point. Landen Roupp RHP finally ran out of magic in the 5'th inning, allowing 3 runs to make it 4-0 Rays and that was for all practical purposes the end of the ballgame. Whatthe.....???

This has been a rough season, I hope you have some friends you can sit and enjoy a drink with. Sending good vibes brother
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words. I have a supportive circle of friends who I socialize with regularly, so I am doing OK. Writing Game Wraps after these discouraging games does get to be a chore though.
DeleteThis is where I wanted to see Vitello go out and take an ejection, fire up the team. This team is so dysfunctional and lifeless.
ReplyDeleteI"ve never understood how a manager getting himself thrown out of a game fires up the team, but that's just me. It does seem to work sometimes.
DeleteYou can’t blame Vitello who inherited this roster. You can’t really blame Posey either who has made more efforts to improve this roster than anyone in the last decade. You can blame Farhan some but he’s long gone. You can blame the players who aren’t performing but you can’t then complain about them not spending money.
ReplyDeleteYears ago Larry Baer made it public that the Giants would never rebuild. They would try to compete and develop every year. That didn’t work under Farhan but Larry still thinks this is the only way to keep butts in seats at Oracle.
The Yankees are one of the proudest franchises in all of professional sports and even they took the opportunity to rebuild in 2016 when they traded away a few relievers for prospects. We have an amazing opportunity to at the very least get something for Ray and Arraez which would all but guarantee a top 5 pick in the draft. If we could unload any of the other big contracts that would be icing on the cake but even if we only traded those two it would still strengthen our farm.
Someone mentioned that they hoped Larry would step down after this year and I really hope that happens. I still believe in Posey and hope he is one step ahead of all of this so all is going according to plan. They have gotten away from pitching and defense which has proven to win in our ballpark. I hope he has a plan to address that next year after clearing some payroll and installing a new direction going forward.
There is plenty of blame to go around but Buster Posey invested a whole lot of money and years in acquiring the core of Chapman, Adames and Devers and has so far failed to find a competent Closer. That is not a good look.
DeleteLooking back for a few key reasons....I hope Larry Baer leaves the organization. He is a hidden force in the background that I think is not healthy for the Giants success. Bob in Dixon.
DeleteRight now the best pick the Giants can have in 2027 is #11. This is based on draft rules and the team having a top 5 pick this year. Of course, this can change since the CBA is set to expire after this season.
DeleteLarry Baer is more of a figurehead, Greg Johnson is the one now running the day to day.
DeleteI am not a fan of Larry Baer and this goes all the way back to his days at UC Berkeley but I don’t see how getting rid of him helps the organization. I do not believe he presently has much of a voice.
DeleteI think this presents an interesting opportunity for the Giants. The way the roster is constructed they are attempting to give themselves the best combination of players that can help win games right now. Obviously they are falling short so instead of trying to win they should shift their focus on trying to develop. Let Bericoto, Susac, Gilbert, and Eldrige play over the vets. Ray and Arraez have trade value and would open up a spot for Casey to start at 2B and Eldridge at 1B/DH. Tidwell, McDonald, Seymore and others could get an audition for next year. Get a good draft pick and regroup next offseason.
ReplyDeleteNone of that solves the Adames/Devers problem which is by far the biggest.
DeleteUnless one of them gets hot and the right opportunity presents itself to trade them. They also don’t have to solve that particular problem this year. The season may be lost regardless so let them take a backseat to the young players and see how it feels to watch from the bench. It doesn’t matter if feelings get hurt or guys ask to be traded, they don’t have a leg to stand on so effectively they made their beds and need to lie in them now!
DeleteNext year maybe they work harder in the offseason and get with the program and if they don’t then we look for opportunities again to trade them after they get hot which is going to happen eventually. Fans would appreciate seeing Eldridge play all year and I think they would support the effort to develop some young players we can build around. The wave of young offensive talent is still 3-4 years away so piece it together until then and maybe invest some FA $ in some pitching in the offseason!
If we truly are stuck with Devers, Adames, and Chapman for the foreseeable future, we can still develop around them but with the understanding that the priority is development not winning. Once the youth has arrived and players like Schmidt, Gilbert, Susac, Rodriguez, Eldridge, Bericoto, Harbour, and several others have found their roles, these contracts will be towards the end and we won’t be as dependent on these players. Giants ownership needs to understand that rebuilding is the only way to sustained success and they need to start now regardless of bad contracts.
The Raya are a hot team , got the feeling.the Phillies had something going after the managerial firing. Bad timing for Giants. The key is to not let the losing go on too long, and come back from it. Upset at Walker for starting another losing streak. New season but still blowing saves. New coaching staff needs time to get going too.
ReplyDeleteThat Walker is still the presumptive Closer has to be one of the bigger front office failures of my life as a Giants fan which now goes back 60 years.
DeleteThis. I appreciate Vitello trying to rebuild him but he seems like a valuable 6th inning guy. Maybe.
DeleteMaybe I'm wrong but it seems like some teams feel like they can find a closer internally, jnstead of spending big. Too bad Randy Rodriguez and Hayden Birdsong could have been options if they weren't injured. They need to develop more pitchers, starters and relievers. I thought Blade Tidwell was an option, but they sent him down to get stretched out. Maybe he's a potential replacement for Houser? They signed a former Tigers closer Jason Foley for $2 mil who is rehabbing and should be ready mid-season. This sounded like a FZ move which isn't bad, but they need a closer now. He won't be eligible for free agency until 2029.
DeleteMorning Doc.
ReplyDeleteIn 2010 Kruk used the word "torture" often describing the Giants games etc.
Today again I am at a losss for words.
It is to early to give up, but god only knows how we will find a way tro loss today.
We have 16 games this month against our division.
Truly the season could be over by June 1st.
I just found a word "pessimisum"!
I feel very conflicted whether I should keep watching.
I can't believe I keep saying "I"!
Lets all hope that they find their groove sometime soon.

Giants @ Rays today, 10:40 AM, T Mayle (1-4, 5.87 ERA) vs S Matz (4-1, 4.31 ERA)
ReplyDeleteMight be a long afternoon before flying home tonight to host the 19-13 Padres tomorrow @ 6:45
Yes, the Giants have a closer problem and questions about the rotation after Webb, Ray, and Roupp, but other than the "Faithful," no one expected much from SF this year.
ReplyDeleteNot so for the "Amazin' Mets" who were supposed to rebound and be a contender, but currently have a 4-man rotation containing 3 who are effective and whose SPs have a combined record of 5-16 among pitchers who have started games this year.
Their lineup includes Forever Giant Austin Slater who started yesterday and has appeared in their last 4 games, and just 2 "regulars" who are not injured and have OPS+ above 100.
The kicker: The Mets are in last place in the National League, 2 games behind the Giants.
Sunday's lineup almost looks like TV threw 9 player cards into a hat and pulled the batting order out one card at a time...
ReplyDeleteAfter today's debacle, I'd ask Walker to report directly to Sacramento (he has options I believe) and DFA Borucki. I'd call up Sam Hentges and Michael Fulmer. Hentges and Fulmer just might stabilize the bullpen at this point.
ReplyDeleteI realize the main problem remains hitting with RISP (and sometimes at all) but they can't DFA Adames and Devers. If they want to be even more aggressive, they could DFA Encarnacion and call up Bericoto. Rodriguez might have more impact but I'd really like him to get as many starts at catcher as possible in Sacramento.
