Game Wrap 5/2/2026: Rays 5 Giants 1

In a microcosm of the Giants season so far, Heliot Ramos LF probably hit a home run in the second inning that probably hit a catwalk but was ruled a flyout on instant replay.  You could all but see the air going out of the Giants sails at that point.  Landen Roupp RHP finally ran out of magic in the 5'th inning, allowing 3 runs to make it 4-0 Rays and that was for all practical purposes the end of the ballgame.  Whatthe.....???

    1. Thank you for the kind words. I have a supportive circle of friends who I socialize with regularly, so I am doing OK. Writing Game Wraps after these discouraging games does get to be a chore though.

  2. This is where I wanted to see Vitello go out and take an ejection, fire up the team. This team is so dysfunctional and lifeless.

    1. I"ve never understood how a manager getting himself thrown out of a game fires up the team, but that's just me. It does seem to work sometimes.

  3. You can’t blame Vitello who inherited this roster. You can’t really blame Posey either who has made more efforts to improve this roster than anyone in the last decade. You can blame Farhan some but he’s long gone. You can blame the players who aren’t performing but you can’t then complain about them not spending money.

Years ago Larry Baer made it public that the Giants would never rebuild. They would try to compete and develop every year. That didn’t work under Farhan but Larry still thinks this is the only way to keep butts in seats at Oracle.

The Yankees are one of the proudest franchises in all of professional sports and even they took the opportunity to rebuild in 2016 when they traded away a few relievers for prospects. We have an amazing opportunity to at the very least get something for Ray and Arraez which would all but guarantee a top 5 pick in the draft. If we could unload any of the other big contracts that would be icing on the cake but even if we only traded those two it would still strengthen our farm.

Someone mentioned that they hoped Larry would step down after this year and I really hope that happens. I still believe in Posey and hope he is one step ahead of all of this so all is going according to plan. They have gotten away from pitching and defense which has proven to win in our ballpark. I hope he has a plan to address that next year after clearing some payroll and installing a new direction going forward.

    1. There is plenty of blame to go around but Buster Posey invested a whole lot of money and years in acquiring the core of Chapman, Adames and Devers and has so far failed to find a competent Closer. That is not a good look.

  4. I think this presents an interesting opportunity for the Giants. The way the roster is constructed they are attempting to give themselves the best combination of players that can help win games right now. Obviously they are falling short so instead of trying to win they should shift their focus on trying to develop. Let Bericoto, Susac, Gilbert, and Eldrige play over the vets. Ray and Arraez have trade value and would open up a spot for Casey to start at 2B and Eldridge at 1B/DH. Tidwell, McDonald, Seymore and others could get an audition for next year. Get a good draft pick and regroup next offseason.

    1. None of that solves the Adames/Devers problem which is by far the biggest.

  5. The Raya are a hot team , got the feeling.the Phillies had something going after the managerial firing. Bad timing for Giants. The key is to not let the losing go on too long, and come back from it. Upset at Walker for starting another losing streak. New season but still blowing saves. New coaching staff needs time to get going too.

    1. That Walker is still the presumptive Closer has to be one of the bigger front office failures of my life as a Giants fan which now goes back 60 years.
